The Jacksonville State Gamecocks Topic

This team's most pressing need was for depth in the backcourt. I got it with Joseph Peterson (#210 overall, #33 PG), who's listed as a PG but will play plenty of SG as well. There are a lot of good things here; he'll become a deadly shooter, his passing and ball handling will still be solid, and his defense will become a strength in time. His weakness is in conditioning, as he won't get much faster or more athletic. It's not like he's slow, but he's certainly not going to be one of my traditional "fast shooter" types at the 2-guard spot. Still, I'm happy with the signing.

Next comes a guy who could end up being the prize of the crop. John Mize (#136 overall, #29 SF, **) won't play much this season behind Fiorillo and Xia, but he's a really nice prospect. There are plenty of areas where I can expect big-time improvement, and he'll ensure we'll be loaded at SF once he gets up to speed on our O/D sets. His weaknesses, defense and stamina, aren't anything I can't work around. They'll still end up OK, and even though he won't improve his speed or outside shooting much, he's already at great points in both areas. I like him a lot, and I'm expecting big things once he starts seeing a lot of playing time.

Finally, I wanted a big to replace Fuller once he graduates (and Young and Arambula, eventually). I got one in Chris Levingston (#71 C). He's no star, and he won't improve his just-OK low-post abilities, but the good news comes in how much he'll improve elsewhere. His "wing" stats will end up at a really nice point to where playing PF won't be an issue despite his lack of speed, and his rebounding will also shoot up. Again, he's not a world-beater, but as a sleeper prospect, he looks good.

THOUGHTS ON RECRUITING

After all my adventures last season, I'm pretty darned happy with the group I brought in. I didn't have a battle for Mize, which was VERY surprising, and I was easily able to knock D prestige Pepperdine (a Sim) off of Levingston. I wish I was able to land a better guard than Peterson, but my first two targets, who were much more local, got snapped up by Big 6 schools. I noticed C- prestige Prairie View A&M was on Peterson, and that the school was also in a bunch of other battles. Therefore, I was easily able to win the brief challenge and complete my class, despite being over 2,000 miles away from the recruit.

Peterson will be the only player who gets significant playing time. Mize will be our #3 SF, and Levingston will be behind Fuller and Arambula at PF and Young and Boren at C. Still, this is a good foundation for the future, and I was able to keep a little over $8,300 in the bank ($2,000+ or which carries over). I'll give this class a B+. It would have been better if one of my first two backcourt targets signed, but it's still a really solid mid-major class.

This ended up being a really solid game. Inadvertently, Fiorillo had a great matchup at SF, drawing a guard, and he was able to get to the line a lot and rebound very well. Also, good games from Boren and Xia off the bench.

I blame this on bad coaching. I figured they would establish the inside game, so I went with a 2-3 zone. Miami, a good team under a good, new coach, instead was content to drain jumpers over it. Not like we played badly, but I'd love to have the chance to replay it with a 3-2 zone and see what happens. They start counting tonight.

This was a loss to a Sim, but it's excusable because their coach left after last season. In fact, they're #24 in the country, and we almost beat them at their place after being down 16 at the half. They shot a TON of FT's, though, and that was the difference.

Very good win. This embodied the "beat the crap out of teams on the boards" style we're running. Big games from plenty of frontcourt players, including Boren off the bench, who's been a revelation early in the season.

Tough loss, albeit to a very tough team on the road. Fuller fouled out, and their opposing center went nuts (despite going against a 2-3 zone, -2, with Young, a low-90's defender, guarding him). RPI 171, SOS 237.

We finished out-of-conference play 6-4. I'm OK with that; the loss to Loyola hurts A LOT, but we beat Notre Dame on the road and have a few other solid wins. RPI 111, SOS 139.

3-1 in our first four conference games. One fluky loss to a decent Sim on the road. RPI 85, SOS 129.
