I nominate dacj501 as the next great star. At DII, he won Rupp with a 35-0 record (only one senior). He was RU (32-3) in Knight.
Well, he cherrypicked up not once twice in Rupp DII to get that team, so while it's a nice accomplishment, I think that takes away a lot of the luster. Probably sounds jerkier than I mean it to be, but a multiple cherrypick is a multiple cherrypick.
First, thanks Al, that means a lot coming from you. I don't think I deserve to be in this discussion anytime soon, but I would like to take the opportunity to ask fmschwab to provide some more information on his claims? What does cherrypicked up twice mean exactly? I'd like to quickly recap my Rupp coaching career. I joined Rupp to take part in the Rupp Mega-Bowl D II festivities. After my D III season, I moved up to an Elizabeth City State squad that was 1-26 the season before. I improved that team every season for 3 seasons, before growing tired of consistently getting my *** kicked in the Central conference, which, at the time, was one of the toughest D II conferences in any world. I decided to give coaching a Hawaii team a try, since I'd heard about the unique challenges, and it sounded like fun. The BYU, Hawaii team I took over was 11-17 the season before I arrived, with a C+ prestige. I recruited something like 7 players that season, and totally rebuilt the roster with my kids by season 2. After 3 seasons of those aforementioned unique challenges (improving every season), I got tired of Hawaii, and frankly the CC was dull and I missed my buds in the Central. Shaw opened up, and I took the job. This championship at Shaw was won with only 2 players left over from the previous regime. 2 important players, and there is certainly no guarantee that we'd have done it without them, but I stand behind my season and my win.
FWIW, fmschwab doesn't mention Knight, where Valdosta State almost won it with 100% my guys (I've been there for 9 seasons except the 1 season in the middle I mis-guidedly took a shot at a D I gig. I missed my squad and returned after 1 season).
I know OP pre-softened his comments so I am not posting with malice.
Again, thanks Al, Shaw's 10 returning players look forward to our match-up with Bowie again this season :)
