P Bobby Shantz ($3,761,848)
P Ryne Duren ($2,394,324)
P Art Ditmar ($6,655,545)

1979 Seattle Mariners
1B Bruce Bochte ($4,832,800)
2B Julio Cruz ($3,768,820)
3B Bill Stein ($1,186,133)
SS Mario Mendoza ($1,180,718)
OF Ruppert Jones ($6,558,444)
OF Joe Simpson ($1,281,014)
OF Willie Horton ($3,635,643)

1969 Chicago White Sox
1B Pete Ward ($1,114,891)
3B Bill Melton ($3,854,567)
OF Walt Williams ($3,069,962)
P Tommy John ($4,879,123)
P Paul Edmondson ($2,073,998)
P Wilbur Wood ($2,571,475)

1979 St Louis Cardinals
C Ted Simmons ($4,177,386)
2B Mike Tyson ($835,511)
SS Garry Templeton ($6,288,937)
P Mark Littell ($2,723,435)
P Roy Thomas ($1,667,210)
P Pete Vuckovich ($5,085,474)

When I selected the 1959 Yankees in the first round, I never envisioned I would only use 2 of their hitters and their combined salaries would be a whopping $624K. No Mantle, Berra, Richardson or Kubek. Instead, I am using 7 hitters from the lowly 1979 Seatle Mariners with help from the 1969 White Sox and 1979 Cardinals to fill in the gaps. The daggers of Mantle and Carlos May were painful to say the least.

Offense
From Seattle, Bochte may be a value at first and offers a decent bat, Ruppert Jones is a good all-around player, Julio Cruz offers 49 SBs with a decent OBP, and last, Willie "The Wonder" Horton provide me with some nice power. I only hope he can catch a flyball on the odd occasion. From the White Sox I get a very average Bill Melton at 3B and one of the best nicknames in baseball to fill out my outfield: Walt "No-Neck" Williams. The Cardinals provide me with 2 excellent players: Ted Simmons (26 HRs) behind the plate and Garry Templeton (19 triples) at short.

Pitching
In a word: "Meh." From the Yankees, a not-so-good Whitey Ford and a very good Art Ditmar lead the rotation. Hopefully Ditmar will shine, and Ford will eat some innings to keep the bullpen rested. Bobby Shantz is very good, Littel, Thomas and Edmonson are okay at the back of the pen and Ryne Duren is a solid closer. Wilbur Wood will knuckle his way through mid-long relief. Tommy John and Pete Vukovich will round out the rotation and hopefully win as often as they lose.

Overall
I don't like this team, but it was fun to construct. It does provide some pop with 128 HRs. 48 triples and some speed with 3 players combining for 109 SBs. The staff will have its moments both good and bad, and I am hoping to manage an 80 win season - a .500 record would be a good thing for Willie the Wonder and the No-Neck.

I always find it interesting to see how I built the team compared with how you went. I'm a little surprised you didn't find a way to use Fulgham in the rotation, and the Willie Horton pick wasn't on my radar. My concern with him is having no fielding rating. I used a DH-only Ohtani in the outfield once and he made an obscene number of errors. His Fld% was like .750. I'll have my eye on that with Willie.

The other thing that will likely have you flinging your hat in the dugout will be the walk-prone bullpen. Some of those guys really struggle finding the plate. I'd better make sure I have a few patient hitters in my lineup!

Park: Sportsman's Park

Pitching: The dagger of Sam McDowell forced me to rework the pitching a few times over, because I couldn't just use Orioles there. I eventually settled on 3 Orioles and Red Faber of the White Sox in the rotation, with only two useful relievers in Bob Bowman and Max Lanier. I have 3 lousy Indians pitchers, because I had to use someone from that team.

Hitting: A trio of Cardinals form the core of this lineup: Johnny Mize, Joe Medwick, and Enos Slaughter. I was actually planning to use the much cheaper Tony Horton at 1B before the McDowell dagger freed up cash to use Mize. It's tough when you have $9M tied up at 1B between him and his backup, so I've used the cheapest possible backups almost everywhere else. When starters like C Gus Triandos and 2B John Kerr are out, the bottom of the order will be brutal. Aside from SS Bill Cissell, there's virtually no speed on this team. By default, Gene Woodling will lead off because he's the best OBP guy. Only Mize and Triandos hit many homers. We'll be playing in Sportsman's Park with +3 doubles to aid Medwick and Slaughter with their best weapons.

Fielding: Since these pitchers don't strike anyone out, I'm happy to have good gloves in the infield. Kerr and Kamm have A+ range, and Cissell brings A- range to the party, too. We'll make a decent number of errors, though, as 6 of my starters have "C" fielding.

Yeah...I got jammed up with dollars with Fulgham and I felt like I needed the IP's from the others. If I had kept Fulgham, I don't think I could have kept Shantz. Without Shantz my bullpen would have been worse than it is. Horton was a last-minute decision. I was going to go with Hendricks from STL in the outfield and a platoon of W.Williams and Buddy Bradford in the OF. Kubek would have been at short and I had shuffled the backups so I would have fit under the $80M cap. I decided to go with Templeton which made me take a look at Horton, but dump Hendricks. Hopefully Horton will hit more HRs than errors.

I love this theme. Even when being dealt and myself picking bad teams, it is such a fun team build.
