Have you seen the Horizon lately? Snow White and the seven dwarfs. NKy has a championship pedigree and seems to be set for bigger things. they would up the competition level straight away.

Northern Kentucky wouldnt' have much of an impact initially. The NCAA requires you to wait 5 years before being eligible for the NCAA tournament, although you can compete in your conference.

When North Dakota St. joined the Summit League, they asked their 5 freshmen to redshirt. In doing so, they were eligible to play in that 5th season.  No. Dakota St. won the Summit Conference and advanced to the NT, where they lost to Kansas 84-74.

Yes, but the Summit is not nearly as good as the Horizon. Northern Kentucky would have a better chance to compete sooner if it joined the Summit than if it joined the Horizon.  I would veture that if you took any of the top 4 teams in the Horizon other than Butler, in any given year, that team would win the Summit. The talent difference is appreciable.  North Dakota State, as good as they were that one season, did not have the talent to win the Horizon or even finish in the top 3.  The Horizon and the MVC are like the feeder conferences for the Big 10 and Big 12. Players who are not quite talented enough (and a few that are) for the Big 10 and Big 12 end up in the Horizon and the MVC. The Summit gets what is left over after that, more or less. 

To draw another parallel, UC Davis has a very good overall athletics program.  They joined the Big West, which is comparable to the Summit, having better facilities and a bigger budget than most of the Big West schools.  UC Davis has done reasonably well, but hasn't rocked the world of the Big West.  Given time, they could rise to the top, but it's been almost 10 years and it hasn't happened yet.  So, it would be silly to think that UC Davis could have gone into the WCC and somehow improved that situation.   The Horizon is to the Summit as the WCC is to the Big West.

NDSU could easily have finished in the top three in the Horizon in 2009.  And yes, I'm extremely familiar with both NDSU and the Horizon.  Butler was the talented but young.  UWGB was solid but not as good as NDSU.  Cleveland State had some high-end talent, but weren't as deep as NDSU.  I actually think they beat UWM in bracketbusters that year.

Although I agree that the Horizon is significantly better in any given year.

More on Radford's Brad Greenberg.   He worked in basketball his entire life but didn't get his 1st head coaching job until age 53.  He's most well-known during his one season as G.M. of the 76ers, when he drafted Allen Iverson over Kobe Bryant. He was fired after that season.

Drafting a future hall of famer over another future hall of famer who happened to be coming out of high school is not a bad choice. 

He went with the safer of the 2.  People in Philly would've gone crazy if he chose a high schooler with the college star Iverson available. 

Fogler was hired to assist athletic director Tim Curley. According to multiple sources, Penn State will consider East Carolina coach Jeff Lebo, who is from Carlisle, Pa. Lebo was also recruited to play at North Carolina by Fogler when he was an assistant to then coach Dean Smith. Lebo's father, Dave, was a longtime coach at Carlisle High.

Lebo was fired at Auburn but hired at East Carolina last year and led the Pirates to an 8-8 record in Conference USA and an 18-16 record overall, losing to Jacksonville in overtime in the CIT tournament.

Duquesne coach Ron Everhart would also listen seriously to Penn State, according to a source. Everhart has taken over a number of programs, notably Northeastern and Duquesne, and turned them into winners.

Drexel's Bruiser Flint is getting third-party calls but hasn't heard from Penn State officials, according to a source. Wiconsin-Milwaukee's Rob Jeter remains a possibility, as well.

But sources expect Lebo to be atop the list based on his connections to the area, his reputation as above reproach and the ties to Fogler.

Arizona State coach Herb Sendek, who has ties to the area, reiterated Wednesday that he's staying put with the Sun Devils and isn't a candidate.
