recruiting for noob Topic

so far I am 1-2 with one loss being by 1 point. Not too bad I guess for a team with no seniors and only 3 juniors and 6 freshman, they are very young and I figured this year would be tough. At least they appear to be progressing ok, several of them have already gained 7-9 points overall in their core areas. Just have to figure out how to dist. the ball better as they are only shooting 40%. Oh well, next year they should all be better and I should compete for the conf. champ. since it is a weak conference.

Not to go to far off topic here but is it a good idea to wait until the recruits sign with teams and then try to snag a few DII recruits that didn't with any teams. I remember looking a few DII guys, the phone returns said something like "I am not considering your school, i jsut want to see wwhat other offers i get, keep in touch" or something to that effect.

No player is perfect at d3, the guys you recruit are going to have flaws. At d3 it is deciding what flaws your players can have that works best for your system.

IE, if you run the press your guys flaws had better not be low speed or athleticism or it will be a very long season.

I'd recommend these being things to look for in recruits (or to not look for):

PG: Forget about PER, if you happen to find a guy and get lucky and he has some, great, but that should be a bonus. Look for Speed, Passing, Ball Handling and Defense here.

SG: You will want some PER here, to go along with BH and PA. I would say worry more about PER, BH, ATH, SPD here try and get somebody who can score for you.

SF: At d3 a small forward is going to be a long ways from perfect. Look for a guy that has solid speed and reb and choose PER or LP (I always go with PER) let the other one be a bonus if he happens to have both. Look for a guy with improvable BH or PA if it's a possibility but, again d3 sf's are not super stars but the sf position can be one of the hardest positions to guard on the court. I like mine to have solid DE but at d3 you usually can't be too picky.

Big Men: Pf/C doesn't matter I have found that pfs tend to have better potential overall then cs do. I personally don't like cs because they never seem to have good speed potential for my liking. But at d3 i would look for guys who have good ATH/REB/LP/DE. And make sure the speed isn't horrific. I use to put PER in there instead of LP but I have not been at d3 in a while and I do not know if you can still find guys that have good PER.

Hope this helps.

Listen to zhawks - I went to him for advice when I was starting out and it made a huge difference. A couple of other things I would add specifically about D3:

- Figure out what your team is going to be about. For me, I'm about 3pt shooting, rebounding, and tough man-to-man defense. So I recruit for Reb, Def, and Ath in my bigs, and Per and Def in my swingmen. PG - I start with BH, Pass, Def, and Spd.
- You're going to have to make sacrifices at D3. For PF/C, if I can get LP or decent speed, that's great, but I've had 30 LP guys shoot 55% from the field because they're getting so many offensive rebounds. Likewise, I've had 38 PER guards shoot 40% from 3pt. Focus first on recruiting players who meet your strengths, not on all-around players. There just aren't many of those at D3.
- I pay a lot of attention to WE and potential. At D3, in my system, a center who can become a 75 Reb (or a guard who can become a 75 BH / Pass) is a gem, and the only way I'm going to get those guys is with high potential and high WE.

I would add that if you play zone, you can sacrifice the def rating for good ath/sp in combination.

The more I play, the more I have become a disciple of speed and athleticism, especially in a zone, but even to some degree in man and press.

I know that at D-III (and I have a D-III team now for the first time in a while) I don't even care what the def rating is if I can find players with ath/sp avg. over 40 each. (I would also take an 60sp/20ath guard or a 60ath/20sp PF/C. I do want the SF to have more balance.)

And those are rough numbers. You have to deal what what is available in any season.

k, thx, i will try to keep all that in mind for next season.
