Make good use of the Redshirt for players you don't need yet - even if the player isn't going to improve allot more because of it, you can use it as a tool for defining your future starting lineups by essentially deferring a guy you want to next year.
My classes are 3/5/1/2. I have 3 centers in my junior class. I would like to redshirt one this year so he can start his senior year, but I do not want him to freak out and leave school or pout and drop work ethic. This is one of those times I wish I could actually talk with a kid ("Son, we see you as a starter and captain next season . . . .") Any thoughts from anyone who has redshirted a player in a year other than their freshman year?

If he doesnt get a lot of minutes he may be willing to take it now. I had a kid on my South Arkansas (D2) team a couple of seasons ago that refused one as a freshman but saw he didn't play much and he took one no problem his sophomore year! but maybe i just got lucky i dont really know

MyG, you'll know from his response and his WE change if he's ok with being R/S. You can always remove it if you'd like with no repurcussions whatsoever. Go ahead and try it, he probably won't like it, but you may get lucky. And if he only drops 8 WE points, then maybe that's still reasonable enough to make it worthwhile to leave it on him.

If I was going to try, it woudl be Kessel. With a sixty two WE, he coudl lose a good bit of WE and still be good. Especially since he is in his Junior year and has the bulk of his improvement behind hi,.

Thanks so much. And Kessel was exactly who I had in mind. I am going for it.

"Coach, I wasn't sure how I'd take being redshirted this season, but to be honest, I'm not taking it well.

Not only that, but it's embarassing getting redshirted as a junior. I'm not a freshman anymore, you know that right?

means no. YOu can take it off and try again you can do this a few times and see if he changes his mind

Whoa. WE down 23 points to 39.

or you could live with the WE of 39 and leave it on him.

Maybe one of the vets can chime on regarding the risk of him transferring after the season. I was really close one time to R/S a senior-to-be b/c of class balancing considerations, but ultimately I never got much feedback from people who have done this to know if the threat of him transferring after his r/s year is a significant one, so I went in another direction.

If you think you may be OK with a WE of 39, then if you take it off and reapply, there's a good chance his WE will drop even more, possibly dramatically more, so just be aware.

I will just say that I have never had a guy 'transfer' that I didn't cut. Doesn't mean they won't, its jsut I haven't been able to get it to happen even when I try.
