Most Firemen don't mind work at all, it's great getting paid to sleep, lol.
That's right, 24 hour shifts, 10 days a month. It's a tough job but someone has to do it.
You guys sit back and take it easy as much as you can. It sure is better for everyone when you're NOT working hard.
But it's also very good to know you're there when we need you to work hard.

Too many people think that all we do is wait around for a fire. I've even be told "all you guys do is drink beer and play checkers all day long". Truth is JD & poker. Actually between medical calls, fires, equipment checks/maintenance, training, PT, Public Education programs, Fire Prevention inspections, maintaining certifications or obtaining new certs the days of sitting around waiting are long gone. Have been for 20+ years.
But as a captain I have been able to arrange somethings (mostly trainings) to allow me to make my progessive draft picks in my time slots. And yes, I have missed some because the tones go off 3 minutes before my slot. Such is life.
