Low splits, great elsewhere - thoughts? Topic

I disagree with the majority here. That guy has Ace potential. My experience with low split / high everywhere else guys is that they are inconsistent. Often dominant, occasionally shelled. I'd like him a lot more if he had more than three pitches, but he should be a solid starter for you. I'd be interested to see what kind of pitching is in the worlds those who are disparaging this guy are in. The ones I'm in, pitchers are worth their weight in gold and this guy could be an All-Star.

I believe this is the guy.

He has 4 pitches and looks like he should be a very good pitcher when he's done developing.

Here is a very similar pitcher depending on what your guys real numbers are vs projected numbers.

Pitches in Scranton with a good D

Justin Shipley

1st year in the bigs age 23

DUR 32

Sta 82Con 87VL 46VR 61G/F 82Vel 76P1 73P2 70P3 44

He is 143-94 with a 4.72 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP

He struggled a bit in his second season but since then he has pitched over 200 innings in each won 15 or more games in 5 of those 8 posted WHIPs between 1.34 and 1.44 each season

Not great but well worth keeping

The key to me is that his vsR is acceptable. I'd be skiddish about a guy with a vsR below 50, but vsL is a whole other ball of wax. Most teams can't field more than about 3 LH/Switch hitters, which means you've got a heck of a pitcher against the other 2/3 of the order.

The only thing I'd say against keeping him is this: Some owners are in love with the idea of a projected OVR above 80 in a SP, so you can probably find a trading partner willing to give you a bunch for him. More than that other LRA type pitcher. You might be able to trade him for a SP prospect you like with 78-ish OVR and the kind of peripheral ratings you favor, plus a legit SuA or COF prospect with enough upside to become a "solid" regular.

Benny Arias is very similar to your guy. Former Cy Young winner, 3 time All Star,175 wins by 32.
