#1 draft pick.....whom do I choose? Topic

#2 can play very soon even if he doesn't reach projections, #1 needs the pitches to all peak to even contribute as #4/#5/LR. Go with #2

Check out the season this guy just put up with some really crappy pitches and very good everything else. I was watching him as an experiment:

Derrick Ward

I know, but his road line was much better than a #4/#5/LRA, as some have suggested. Here it is:

17 starts

7-4

81 K/33 BB

.259/.316/.367

1.36 WHIP

3.67 ERA

Not a Cy Young winner, but pretty salty nonetheless. And while his control is excellent, his splits are very good but not drop-dead great.

I'm just saying, people are too quick to dismiss this type of pitcher. They can make terriffic middle-of-the-rotation guys and maybe passable #1/2s.

Pitcher #1 has much better splits than Ward, as well.

Gabby Martin

His career was significantly hurt by the old bug that didn't allow for ratings recovery from injuries during a particular time frame at the end of the season, but his less-than-stellar pitches haven't kept him from being very productive.

I would love to see the rotations that the guys who say #1 is a 5th starter trot out there in their leagues.

#1's bad pitches do hurt his overall value, but he'll still be a very good pitcher, as you'd be surprised at how much his good control and splits will negate the poor pitches.

Now back onto the issue at hand. If I had the #1 pick in that draft I'm not sure I'd be incredibly pleased that those were my best 2 options. I'd probably go with #1 if I didn't have a stud hitter available to take instead.

i'd think about picking one who wasn't likely to sign and then grab pick #2 the following season...

Maybe I'm missing something, but why would anyone not want Pitcher 2 at the top of their rotation. Great control, great splits, high VE, three excellent pitches? If not an ace, certainly a very good SP.

Pitcher #1 has great control and splits, and a better GB, but his pitch quality is mediocre.

Pitcher 1 is my choice. 90 plus control, 90 vs R, 90 velocity and 100 gb/fb ratio more than makes up for the subpar pitches, as zbrent pointed out.

Pitcher 2 is not top pick quality, because he is a tweener, a guy who will get you 85 pitches max. If his stamina was higher I'd entertain the thought of taking him over pitcher 1.

Dean Hernandez

I found this guy in another league...he has good pitches, close to pitcher #1...and he has won at least 7 CY Young Awards.... and pitcher #1 has better control, and the same if not a tad better splits.
