This past offseason Patrick Rivera, who turned 39 years old and has 97 Patience, decided that since I did not re-sign him the season before that he was going FA no matter what.

33 is past his prime?

You seem to think that every player in his 30s is just in a constant state of decline... which just isn't true.

If you want to keep him, and can afford to do it, don't risk him throwing a hissy fit after rollover and insisting on testing the FA waters.

His OVR isn't likely to improve, but his demands might change, which I guess isn't really the answer to the original question... but it sheds more light on factors that can go into making the decision the question was asking about.
