High-loss teams in the NT vs. in RL Topic

Still, even so, Prof. The fact that even in that case only two sixteen win teams made it. . . .
For the past few seasons, though, real-life teams have been allowed up to 31 regular season games. So that makes it even more unlikely that a 15 or 16 win team would qualify as an at-large team in today's game. The HD example with Duke being 15-12 really isn't analogous to current real-life college basketball, because in real life they would have played anywhere from 1 to 4 more games, and there's a good chance they'd have 17+ wins.

My only real point in all this is that it's a bit misleading to compare raw win totals of at-large teams in HD with real-life, because the real life teams may be playing as many as 5 more regular season games vs. HD teams, giving them a lot more opportunities to pad their win total.

And there is also a chance, or a probability that those three extra games woudl hurt their SOS and therefore RPI. Just saying, either way, it woudl be a team on edge or cusp of getting in, not a surefire 10th seed or better.

Didn't Georgia make the tournament in the Jim Harrick years with a 15-13 record or something like that?  Similarly, I'm pretty sure Florida State made the Sweet 16 in the late 90's when they had only around 16 wins in the regular season.  Not HD examples, but examples nonetheless.
I could be wrong but I thought Georgia won the SEC Tourney that season.

A minimum of 15 wins in HD really isn't a fair comparison to 15 wins in RL with the disparity of games played.

If you twist the numbers the other way and ask for teams with 12 or more losses getting at large bids here are a few;
2010:  9) Louisville, 10) Georgia Tech, 10) Florida, 11) Minnesota
2009:  9) Tennessee, 10) Michigan, 10) Maryland, 12) Arizona, 13) Mississippi St
2008:  9) Oregon, 10) Arizona, 11) St. Joseph's 12) Villanova, 12) Kentucky
2007:  10) Texas Tech, 11) Stanford, 12) Arkansas
2006:  8) Arizona, 8) Kentucky, 10) Alabama

none lower than a 13 seed.  More than half a 10 seed or better.

I will just wait to respond from now on, see what #'s iguana posts, and then let everyone know what side I'm on.

With the exception of St. Joseph, all the bids went to power conferences.  Kinda like what HD will probably be like after this latest recruit generation update takes hold in a few seasons.  What fun...

16 - 14.  They were one of the two that made it with 16 wins.

girt, didn't that Badger team that made the Final Four under Dick Bennett have 13 losses?

I think they finished 6th in the Big Ten, got an 8 seed and lost to Michigan State four times that season.

18 - 13 regular season. and 8 - 8 in conference. 16 - 12 regular season, went 2 - 1 in the conference tourney.
