When the next man up is Julio Serra.

No way I would delay bringing back Newfield in favor of that guy.

His ratings look good but he didn't have a good season last season. Hitters have a .387 OBP and also he is 34 years old. Maybe you should demote a position player and pitch him to see if you can't get his stats down. Then next season see if some other team likes him better and is willing to pay him 10 mil.

If you don't want any responses, why ask?
Grow up, Mike. I want leigitmate responses, not your nonsense. We can play that game in another thread.
So I should grow up?   Am I the one constantly throwing insults?     I don't think so.

If you "believe" in anything in this game is HAS to be the ratings.  The sample size this season is terribly small in only 48 innings of work.  Without question I would bring him back off the DL and have him as my SuA in a heartbeat.  Perhaps if you are worried about him just tag him with a little elevated pull rating.  Eventually all players level to their ratings, all things being equal.

I believe I would choose B. However, I would also see if there was a position player with options that was used very little, that way you could have your cake and eat it too.
I considered this. It is another option - do I risk going with one less bench player (I am an NL team so need more pinch hitters) for those 19 games? My question really is, even if the game is numbers only and not about streaks, if you have a bad vibe when a certain player is on the roster, would you leave him off in this situation?
How much of a lead do you have? As far as the position player goes I usually keep 12 and 13pitchers. If you have a 1baseman, leftfielder type, they are a dime a dozen.
I have a 14 game lead in the division. However, I am tied for the #2 seed right now and 2 games behind the #1 seed. The position player I would send down is a backup first baseman who has been underperforming all season, though he has been giving my low DUR, MVP-caliber left fielder some extra days off (moving my regular 1B to LF when he does) -- but I already have 12 pitchers on my roster so this would up me to 13, leaving only 4 bench players, though I use a regular platoon and have been giving out rest fairly liberally this season

But also look at the last 2 seasons - for a top reliever, he has now lost 27 games over the past 3 years - that is B-A-D.

.Poor reliever management.

In fact, last season he lost 10 games, blew 8 saves, and had an ERA of 4.27 -- to the point I had two closers late in the year and eventually moved him to Setup, I grew so untrusting of his abilities.
9/22/2010 4:24 PM
Honestly for me you are using him poorly.  You would get far more value out of him in a SuA role.  Set him to a 30-40 pitch count with a pull of 2-3 depending on the rest of your bullpen...He'll pitch 2-3 high impact innings every few days.  You could easily get 125+ innings out of him at close to his career numbers...Also has your late inning catcher's PC changed? his OAV could be adversly effected by that as well.  With anything less than 100 innings in a season from my experience, the significance of just a few bad outings can dramatically effect a RPs stats.

I also think closers...for what people want their closers stats to look like...Should be set to use closer only in closing situation with a pitch count no higher than 20 and 9th inning availablity.  You'll get 50-60 innings and the low loss and blown save stats you are looking for...

The guy you have as your closer should be the horse of your bullpen picking up wins and lossses from NDs while being a sturdy bridge between your SPs and closer...
9/22/2010 4:32 PM
Yeah...that guy shouldn't be a closer.

Also, the folks who have said you have to believe in the ratings are right. I'd rather lose with my best guys out there than wonder what if I had put them out there or not...

I think if you're seriously looking at pitcher losses as a useful metric for performance, trying to reason with you is futile.

Well then I would send the underachieving 1B-LF down and activate the relief pitcher. Play it by ear, try him at Set up A and see how he works out. You can use the person who fills in for your skill positions(2b,ss,cf) in the 1b-lf placeand this should upgrade your defense.

Well it turns out that I have taken option D... Newfield is ready to come off the DL right now, but Ijust worked out a trade to move a Setup B guy (not Serra, another guy) for a minor league catching prospect. Therefore, I am going to keep Newfield on the DL three extra games until the trade goes through and then activate him to take that open roster spot.
