How do u figure out if potential is "High-High" or "Low-High"?
from the written words when doing player evals, words like sky is the limit or massive imply high-high, etc
player evals as in doing a scouting trip?

tip from a conference mate, i dont think you'll find many recruits at the d3 level that are good enough to justify ignoring need.

for example, there was one randomly ridiculous recruit this past recruiting season (knight d3) that was projected to go to a d3 school but my scouting said was better than any d2 players at his position...a d2 school scooped him up. it would have been worth ignoring need to go after him...but not worth bombing an entire 5-man class for a 50% chance of getting him, if you ask me.

i usually determine my need based on what my team would look like sans seniors and juniors (or just sans seniors, if you have smaller classes), similar to OR i guess.

I always recruit best available for my need.  If I need a big to get ready to repalce a junior when he leave I would not take a guard.  I also find fr bigs perform better then fr guards

to whomever asked: here is a list of the high high and low high message for each attribute. once you get a feel for medium and low message, they are pretty obvious, so this is the only set i have saved because it is the part that can most easily get confusing:
Ath
Definitely wasn't the best athlete on the floor - unless I'm an idiot and/or this is the laziest kid ever, we can *dramatically* improve his athleticism.
Good athleticism - I'm going to go out on a limb and say that he could improve substantially if he really works at it.
Spd
if he works hard at it, we could see *massive* improvement here
with the right diet and conditioning he could be MUCH quicker than he is today
Reb
Fantastic rebounding instincts - there's no reason to NOT expect HUGE improvement here.
based on my experience, he can still improve substantially if we work with him and he's willing.
Def
I really think we could see massive improvement by his Senior year.
if he's willing to listen, we could really see some major improvement.
Sb
he's shown glimpses of raw ability which make me think he just has *tremendous* room for improvement
has a LOT of room for growth with the right drills and coaching. / definitely has above average room for growth with the right drills and coaching
Lp
skys the limit
has a LOT of room for growth with the right drills and coaching.
Per
I see such solid fundamentals that with enough practice I don't see why he can't be a *significantly* better shooter than he is today
I know this may sound crazy, but I think he has the potential to really improve his shot.
Bh
he has the raw skills to make me think he has *tremendous* upside.
with the right drills and assuming he's willing to put in the time, I see big upside
Pass
with more experience I expect to see TREMENDOUS improvement.
I'd like to see him play more, but still, I really think we could see fairly significant improvement.
Sta
with the right diet and drills, I think we can see a *dramatic* change in his conditioning
even with that, I think we can really improve upon his conditioning
FT%
the fundamentals look solid, with time and coaching, he could really show some improvement. - i think there is only high potential for FT as i have never seen any other message

ben - what an impressive start for you at this game, you new to it, or an alias for an established coach?  Either way, I tend to go for need in a two man rotation sense, then for talent with my 11th and 12th men.  I tend to look 2-4 years out.  I took the liberty of showing you how I do it with your MSOE team.

Name Yr. Pos. A SPD REB DE BLK LP PE BH P WE ST DU FT TOT
James Williams So. PG 38 75 2 41 2 1 42 60 56 32 78 36 B 463
Milton Rathbun Sr. SG 69 64 11 59 2 38 83 68 61 53 79 56 B- 643
William Seward Jr. SG 52 56 28 64 9 34 55 53 36 37 72 81 C- 577
Robert Murphy So. SG 48 66 1 49 3 40 60 39 59 50 79 18 C 512

Harlan Riner So. C 91 17 32 89 28 42 1 5 2 19 67 80 C 473

This year:  PG - williams (so) - 11 (fr) / SG Rathborn (sr) - Murphy (so) / SF Seward (jr) - Schuler (fr) / PF Trambley (jr) - Riner (so) / C Fairfax (jr) FresQ (sr)

If I were taking this team over, my 11th man need is a C, who I would call 15 (1=frosh, 5 = center, net 15),  that would leave my 12th man as anything.

Then I would look at next year:

wiliams jr - 11 so
Murphy jr - 22 fr
seward sr - shuler so
Trambley sr - riner jr
Fairfax sr - 15 so

Using this analysis, your biggest need for a 12th man may indeed have been a SG - who I designated as 22 in my quick and dirty team planning, that also would have been the ideal guy to recruit and redshirt based on team need.  I really don't have too much trouble finding talent I guess, I am more of a need recruiter, the more I think of it.

Is that confusing?  Does that help?  YOu can site mail me with any ?'s or jsut ask here.
this kind of forward thinking recruiting planning is probably the single most important thing you can do in this game. at least in my opinion.
