Evaluating the value of CF defense Topic

In the past good glove was the way to win. 2 years ago there was a correction, and as usual they over- corrected. now high range guys are priced so high they aren't worth using. low Error guys are still useful at the positions that make a ton of errors.
Yes, deadball pitchers are supposed to hurt your defense but I haven't seen much evidence of it. I suspect the effect is quite small. the problem is they lowered deadball pitcher salaries to compensate and that's why deadballers are so underpriced.

I always go with the bat in the OF, and range be damned, because I've always believed that range is overrated in this game.

I completely disagree with this statement, but it's different strokes for different folks.  Or more importantly, which salary cap you play more frequently.

I mainly play in OLs.  But pretty much all of my OL championships have come with D- range guys, even at SS and 2B.  I draft pitching and offense and don't care much about range, because my pitchers and my offense will more often than not, compensate for any range deficiencies.  But like you said, different strokes for different folks.

Gold glove awards are worthless in my book. I want championships. I usually want an a+ range cf. Especially in1b+ parks, the more 1b+ the more hits are likely, thus the more the a+ defender takes away.  However the better defender the more likley his price to be higher. Defense is exspensive, so sometimes I use higher k pitchers and less on defense.
I'm not sure this is a cost-effective compensation.  Pitchers' Ks are the second most overpriced attribute in the sim behind A+ arms on low-PA catchers.
Well as I said, if your in extra +1b parks (hilltop) and you have low k pitchers and poor range outfield it seems to be a recipe for a last place team.

Not that I have any tangible proof of this but, IMO, I think the range of middle infielders would have a bigger effect in + singles parks than outfielders. I think superior outfielder range is beneficial in + doubles parks.

I agree that Gold Gloves are worthless, as is any award or achievement - all that matters is the W.

I don't understand why, though, you would draft higher K pitchers as an offset for defense?  The determination as to whether or not there is a K comes after the hit/out determination, so the only positive effect Ks would have on defense is they prevent poor plays and errors - a very small percentage of the plays.

That's the vast majority of plays impacted by defense, however.

But that's only poor plays and errors on plays that would otherwise be outs.  Many plus plays, especially in the OF, affect the type of hit (turning a 2B into a 1B, for example).  I'm not saying Ks don't help, but it seems to me the help is minimal - and isn't  an adequate substitute for defense.

If you're drafting a team with poor range, + plays are functionally meaningless.  Granted, there are - plays that do the opposite, but they are a definite minority.

Well if you strikeout more less balls will be hit into play. Thus you don't need "better" fielders. It has worked well for me.

I'm not saying poor range won't work in  extra +1b parks. But I would myself would be afraid to try it.  I usually up the middle do A fielders with a little less range. I've been succsessful with my formula. Just sayin....
