I do admire the coaches that think they're B+/A FT shooters.

You do realize that means you should shoot 80-85% in game situations which would mean you better be at least 90-95% in practice.

Back in the old days it wasn't uncommon for me to hit 40+ FTs in a row during practice but I probably was no better than a B+ rating for games.
I was over 80% from the FT line in games. Used to drain 15-20 ft in a row during practice no problem.

Ive only been playing basketball for about 5-6 years (junior in high school to just graduated colloege) but most people I have played with were surprised when I told them that. Never played on a real team with a coach and am entirely self taught as a player. If theres one thing I can do well its pass the ball. Think perfect full court bounce passes through 2 defender for an easy lay in. I love making an entry pass to the post just close enough so the defender thinks he has a chance and goes for the ball and then misses, is out of position, and gets scored on.
height is already factored in...
So if I was a slightly above average rebounder for my size what would my rating be? Im not going beat out a taller player for a board but can box out decently.

Unless people here are or were college basketball players, some of these ratings are very generous

At 32, I can honestly say that I've maintained and even improved on quite a bit of my athletic ability.  Like another user, I'll post 2 sets.  Age 19, when I was just out of high school and consistently playing ball in tournaments etc... and where I think I'd be right now, without having played basketball consistently in more than 5yrs.  (with that said, I'm still highly active in competitive flag football and other sports)

You don't need to be basketball player to have high ath/spd. A football player could just as easily have 80 ath 70 spd.

change "college basketball players" to "college athletes" for those two categories

but mainly i'm referring to people giving themselves these lofty defensive ratings....

Defense is one of the ratings that should always stay relatively high.  It is supposed to reference defensive fundamentals and desire to play defense.  I would suspect that a lot of people have a high DE rating, even if their ATH/SPD are both in the teens and they would be weak defenders, their knowledge and desire would still be there.

I think you are giving too much credit to DIII basketball players.

I think youve never watched any division 3 basketball.

I'm a 35 yo with very little potential. Two knee operations and the ability to put down junk food has led to most of that. I do have the ability to still shoot and the free throws would get better just due to genes.

No, I have. And played with many DIII players. All it takes to play DIII is desire. The very top teams are pretty good but the average teams are just made up of kids who wanted to play at the next level. I've known plenty of kids who are better than a lot of DIII players but didn't want to go to that small of a school.

I disagree.  I consider myself pretty legit athletically (8 years ago, anyway), and played pretty high level volleyball and was a collegiate baseball player.  Never played organized basketball, but I could always hold my own, even with college players.  Even when I was at my peak, I was impressed when I played with D3 players how much better they were than high schoolers, even good ones.  Obviously, there were some guys who shouldn't have been playing collegiate basketball, but the majority of guys were pretty good.

At the school I work at we have sent 3 kids to DIII schools in the last 5 years. Only one of them was even all conference in high school. They were good players but nothing special

cburton & tkimble's posts are good arguments as to why I've argued that walk-ons in this game should be in the 350-370 range (for DIII, and higher in DII and DI) and not as bad as they always end up being.

between 2000 and 2006, I worked part-time at a community rec center where we had a smattering of DIII players come in, and even a coupled DII and DI guys.  I would play pick-up games with them sometimes.  I could hang with the DIII guys that played.  they were definitely better than me, but I didn't embarrass myself against them.

I was in my mid 20s when I worked there, and i'm of decent athletic ability - 6'2", 185 lbs, but i'd only played one year of organized basketball.  i'd probably be in the 350-360 rating range in WIS, but with low IQs.  if someone of decent athletic ability can hang with DIII players, I've always argued there's no reason walk-ons in this game should be so crappy.
