Relief pitcher - how to get him on track? Topic

Just signed  http://www.whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=3237301  78aS 84 aA 88pC also has a little pop and a pretty decent vR.  He'll be the lefty in my platoon taking most of the at bats

94/44 dur stam....it warms my heart to see you on pace for 200 IP. bump him up to 50 PC, he can take it. You can get 250 IP out of him.

People will differ in opinion here, but....hunt other people minors until you find a catcher with min 75/75 arm accuracy and strength and min 87 PC. You'll get him for a song and your pitchers will thank you.
Willie Valenzuela. Him. Learn to tolerate OPS in the mid .500s if you can get his ratings.
Gotta disagree with this. Find a thumping bat capable of .875 OPS and AS/AA/PC in the 60s. Your pitchers will thank you for the run support. I would be hard pressed to tolerate a mid-.500s OPS from any position. Gotta score a few to win.

danknuggz, HBD/baseball is a marathon, not a sprint.  a good player will even out his stats over a full season.  it does happen where a player never hits their potential, but not often.

your reliever is a beast and there is no way i would give up on him unless you said you have another stud closer waiting in the wings.  i would suggest only having him pitch the 9th inning and limit his pitches to 30 and maybe set him as 2 for getting pulled.  i have seen several great closers struggle at times and still get 40 saves.  HBD isn't as realistic as MLB so stud closers tend to blow more games in HBD.

mpodber, that is an interesting suggestion.  From what I can tell, getting the most innings out of your best pitchers seems to be the leading strategy around here.  It makes sense to me.  You think him only pitching one inning per game will increase his effectiveness? I'm nowhere near giving up on him, but I am grasping at straws hoping he'll get going.  He's now given up 12 HR in 24 games playing home games in comerica.  That's already one more than he gave up in 62 games last year.  That's why I think he's been hanging out with Jeff Weaver lately... http://ontheshow.blogspot.com/2007/05/jeff-weaver-back-on-pot.html

What effect, if any, do you think his lack of a fastball has on his lack of effectiveness (1P=screwball 2P=Changeup)?

The guy is a stud.  Even being a stud his OVR is overrated and I wouldn't sign him to any kind of contract, and would trade him for a substantial haul before he needs to be resigned.....but since you have him now, don't worry about him.  Whatever crap he is slinging right now will auto correct as the year progresses to land his stats where they should be....which means at some point soon you will have goose eggs flying out of his arse. Don't fiddle with settings, just keep trotting him out there.

I think that guys with only two pitches (unless they are both HUGE) almost always underperform.

I agree with this.  I think the fewer pitches he throws the more effective he will be, even with that stamina.

I believe that WIS has said that more pitches are more effective then 2 when everthing else is equal.  But this guy is a horse, simple as that.  He should be a SUA est to come in the 6th, and have a MP count of 40-45.  He can pitch 2 innings nearly every single game in that situation.  That is crazy valuable, because you can have 1 less (maybe 2 less) RPs in your bullpen if he had average dur/sta.  Ratings are by far the most important consideration on a player, not his stats.  Stats will in general even out over the year (with minorish variances).  If I had this guy Id be so happy, and Id definately give him his asking price when he is a FA.  8 mill a year isnt unreasonable for him.

Yep, the guy is a beast--surely one of the 4-5 best RPs in your world.  If you were to trade him, you should get a very substantial return.  About his current underperformance, I don't believe I have any supporting evidence, but I have a very strong suspicion that how many pitches a pitcher has matters the more innings he pitches.  If you found a pitch count that kept him under 2 IP per game (my guess for him that's somewhere around 30), I bet his ERA would go down.  In the long run, you may have to choose 200 IP of ~4.00 ERA or 130 IP of ~3.00 ERA, because I think he is capable of either one..

Gotta go with Moe. :) I have had similar guys. His 2 pitches are decent, not great. I think that's what is causing most of his problems. Unless one of his 2 pitches is in the 90's, I don't think you can count on his to consistently get ML hitters out.

I just opened up the League Leaders stat sheet for my world and quickly clicked through to find two-pitch RPs with similar stuff.  These guys seem to be doing okay with just two, reasonably decent pitches:

1)  http://whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=3541939
2) http://whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=2145573
3) http://whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=2198893
4) htthttp://whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=2783830

His ERA is just a run of bad luck.

Max,

Those guys have career WHIP/ERA #'s of 1.16/3.44, 1.32/3.91 and 1.21/3.71

Which are basically what Stairs' #'s were coming into this year.  (about 1.24/3.50)

This year is a bit of bad luck, for sure....but he's not as dominating as he should be because he just has two pitches.

He's a very valuable guy, however....just not a beast.
