Best Player You've Ever Coached Topic

Robert Coffey - currently on my Longwood Iba team. Just announced as DII National POY.

Longwood records - #3 in all-time points, #4 in all-time assists, #1 in Steals, #1 in 3point percentage, #7 in FT percentage.

We've been the #1 RPI the last 3 seasons in DII Iba with him at the PG position. We will be much worse after he graduates this season.

Carlos Diaz was mine.  Walk on that went on to become Conf POY.  Is still 3rd all time in rebounds and 1st in FT%.  Freak athlete with very few skills to speak of (other than FT, obviously).  Had a career asst/to ratio of 1:24.  Not because he was a turnover machine but because he finished his career with 9 assists.

For me Chris Dinardo was my favorite for a long time, never won conf poy somehow but was all american send team, preaseason all american, 2 time first conference and the all time leading scorer at Salem International.

I would now add to the mix David Howze who I just graduated from ABC. His stats aren't that impressive b/c my team was so stacked I didn't rely on him a ton, but by his SR year he had a 90 spd, 99 BH and 99 PA in D2. His final season he was CPOY even though he only had about 12 ppg which I think his FG% was some ridiculous number for a guard like .580 or something. Would be the definition of a smart PG, only shooting when needed and passing to the open man.  Averaged just under 1 turnover a game his SR year while playing 25 minutes.  Plus I recruited him at that school when I had a C- prestige and when he graduated 5 years later (after RS) we were an A+ school. Always have room in my heart for the first stud that helped turn around a team.

Michael Groner and Daniel Cameron, though my SR-to-be Melvin Johnson is in the mix:

Groner: 122 GP, 122 GS, 22.3 MPG, 81% FT%, 16.3 PPG, 1.9 SPG. First in team records for Points and Steals and 4th for FT%. My first star player (that I recruited)
-But he didn't lead us very far, only the PT championship game and was disappointing as far as team results went.

Cameron: 123 GP, 90 GS, 17.8 MPG (keep that in mind), 50.4% FG%, 47.3 FG3%, 3.2 APG, 1.4 SPG, 9.9 PPG
-An absolute scorer, had 80+ SPD and 90+ PER if I remember right. Led me to two NT berths as JR/SR, my first NT and then the next year as a SR he lead me all the way to an Elite 8. As a SR he won conference player of the year, playing less than 17 minutes a game in conference but scoring over 20 PPG.

Derek Clark

As a 'D' prestige school at New Hampshire, I struggled to find a decent player.  I saw an overlooked 2 year JUCO in Idaho that I signed (despite the recruiting distance) without a fight.

He was on my bench for most of his first season as I slowly realized he was something special.  I won 24 games and went to the NT.

Then I rode him like friggin' Mike D'Antoni riding friggin' Jeremy Lin like friggin' Secretariat.

His senior season?  Scored over 1000 points, led me to an rpi of 10 and I went 26-5.

He was drafted #1 (first overall).  National Player of the Year.

Not a bad signing for a D prestige school.

Billy Ruff was 99 ath, 50ish speed, 99 rebounding, 99 defense, 99 shot blocking, 99 low post, perim somewhere in the 40's, 65 ball handling, B- FT shooter. He stayed all 4 years, was first team AA twice, and won DPOY his senior year. Easily the best d1 player I've coached

It is a tie for my favorite players.
1)  Angelo Smith  as he was my first player drafted and one of my first players signed in DI and is still the top scorer for a human coached player at Belmont.
1) Michael Allen was a beast at Johnson C. Smith and still my all time leading scorer.

Paul Monarrez and Robert Morin were my two best players, one for Texas Tech and the other for Notre Dame.  Morin finished with a 1015 overall rating and started with a 778 and is my only #1 overall draft pick.  Monarrez is one of only 2 1st team All-Americans I have ever had.

I have two potentially great players on two different teams right now that may end up being my favorite and/or best.  Jermaine Colman and Dikembe Banda.

I recruited for a friend one year and ended up, with a C+ prestige, grabbing Jeffrey Perry, a localish player who started at only 381 but who I thought had crazy potential.

Starting ratings:

Athleticism  32 High     Perimeter  1 Average
Speed  1 High     Ball Handling  1 Low
Rebounding  83 Average     Passing  1 High
Defense  30 High     Stamina  48 High
Shot Blocking  75 High     Durability  21 High
Low-post  39 High     FT Shooting  Average

Final career numbers: 2400 PTS, 1250 REB, 100 STL, 325 BLK on .572 shooting.

Even though I got to the DII championship game two seasons later, my favorite player (on my best team in season 37 in Knight) was Al Bertrand Listed at PF, he exclusively started at Center.  Two time conference player of the year and first and second team all-american.

However, Al wasn't the most durable player.  He had no significant injuries until the final regular season game of his senior year.  If I recall correctly he blew out his shoulder.  I had to sit him through the entire conference tournament, but his health never recovered above about 88% before we lost in the Sweet 16 game.

No need to wonder...I am still seething about it.

I remember that Wisc Eau Claire team very well.... insane recruiting class and Perry is one of the best D3 players I can remember

That class was me, though it wasn't my team or my gameplanning.

Can't choose between a couple guys:

Homer Vallone PF - Seasons 21-23 for Wesleyan (Rupp). Averaged 10.1 PPG, 12.6 RPG, and 2.3 BPG over his 3 seasons. Got him when I first started this game, loved seeing his high rebounding totals. Still #1 in rebounds for that team.

John Pfeifer SG - Seasons 18-21 for Lincoln D3 (Crum). Averaged 15.7 PPG, 2.9 APG, 2.7 RPG, and 3.41 3's/game over his career with his SR season leading the team to the Final Four. No All-American awards, but was the DIII Freshman of the Year but made the All-Conference team all 4 seasons, 2 First Team, and Second, and Third. Was on the DIII all time scoring list for awhile.

http://www.whatifsports.com/hd/PlayerHistory/Default.aspx?pid=1449746 and http://www.whatifsports.com/hd/PlayerHistory/Default.aspx?pid=1449747.

Swarthmore in Knight seasons 22-25.  Both played together for 4 years and combined for 7833 points (33.0 ppg and 32.0 ppg career in only 20.7 minutes per game average).  I don't have their ratings, this was before I kept track of them, but I don't think either were more than 650 overall.  Betweem them, they got 7 all-american 1st teams, 1 all-american 2nd team, and 3 national player of the years.

Of the 5 worlds I'm in, these two guys are 2nd and 3rd overall amongst all 3 divisions behind only mlcrew's Randy McDowell in Tark (4094 pts - 33.6 ppg career).  I also have a guy who scored 3774 - 34.6 ppg career in D1 Tark.

...is there a chance they got all of those points 'cause no one else was shooting?
