Poison Pill League (8 in) Topic

Welcome, scud.  Well, I'll bet we can come up with 48 players no one is excited to use.  Heck, give me an hour and I'll bet I could generate the list myself.  But yes, there may be a lot of debate on the margins.

Big E I definitely see as an albatross.  Bad News Barnes is slightly debatable since he does rebound well and his usage and efficiency aren't that outrageous.  But he does rack up the PFs and TOs, for sure.

easy to find 48 guys no one would be excited to use, but that would be the, "screw your neighbor league". but this is sim poison... still think it's gonna be hard to find sim posion. but i'm game.

Fair enough.

bluenote, I'll encourage you to consider replacing Wilkins with a cruddier player season, but I won't insist on it at this point...I'd like to hear some more opinions, and we'll have to see how right scud turns out to be about the difficulty of finding 48 truly poisonous dudes.

I don't consider 84-85 Dominique Wilkins to be sim poison.

Hmm, the scales are leaning heavily against the Human Highlight Film.

I tend to look for some nasty combination of high fouls and turnovers, low efficiency (especially plus high usage), and a player who doesn't do what he's supposed to do well at a particular position (like a center who doesn't rebound much, or a point guard who doesn't pass much).  Overall, someone who hurts you in the possession game and isn't worth the money you're required to spend on him.

10-11 Brook Lopez
98-99 John Starks

lopez is I think the worst high minute rebounding big in the database
Starks is one of the worst 3 point shooters ever in that year.. making 128 of 442 3s (29.1%)

Welcome, logain!

Yep, I just looked at Lopez's rebounding percentages and they're worse than I imagined.

You need to pick again on the second one, though.  Starks doesn't meet the $6 mil salary floor.

oh missed that part. one sec

I submit 52-53 Joe Graboski the worst shooter with 6 mil salary

If we could force players to be played at listed position that would make this a bit easier. A terrible rebounding pf can be hidden at sf if he is say 97% there.

Dominique... is not so sim poisonous.. but he isn't a guy many teams use either. So many better choices. Tough call on that one. The rules mention unlucky players.. so this isn't just about stats.

What players would be considered "unlucky"?
3/10/2012 10:59 PM
my nique take

I searched for guys with 30 usage and then 32.5 usage or higher

For 32.5 usage (tier 1)
that nique has the 12th lowest efg in the databse.. 6 of the seasons ahead of him are AI and one is the Stackhouse already nominated
He also shoots less 3's than anyone in front of him on that list
Of the top 12 worst shooters in tier 1 he has the 6th highest salary
Of the top 12 worst shooters in tier 1 he has the lowest AST% by far

on the other hand.. nique plays D, rebounds well for a SG, shoots a good deal of FTs at good %, doesn't foul or turn it over alot...

debateable..

I would lean towards allowing players like Nique that are weak in 1-2 vital areas that keep them off of most teams in the sim. The fact that his salary is 7.5 mil.. well over the 6 mil floor makes him just bad enough to me to make the cut.

I don't know. Some people say they just never get what they should out of such and such player.

If the general consensus is that 'Nique is not poisonous enough, I'm cool with picking someone else.

I do pose this question: In any other league, how many people would select the 84-85 version of 'Nique for a team they were putting together??  By choice, I wouldn't.   Logain described a lot of the reasons I selected him...high usage, low efg%, minimal 3's, plus a 7 1/2 million salary.  There is a pretty good chance he will be the highest usage player on the team that drafts him.  Do you want your top usage guy popping shots at a 45% clip??  I think his negatives outweigh his positives.

Also I was thinking about this part of longtallbrad's original post when I nominated him: "The founding vision of this league is that players on the poison list should generally be players who rarely if ever get drafted in the current version of the sim. Either there's something obvious that prevents them from being a good fit on a competing team - terrible shooting percentages, horrible defense rating, high usage, high TOs/PFs, etc. - or they just seem plain unlucky"   Has anyone seen a league where this version of 'Nique is used?

If the group decides he isn't poisonous enough...I'm sure I can find another stinker out there.
