How to take advantage of superior speed? Topic

Would you put him at +2 billy?
i dont know. he has solid ft shooting. if his ft shooting was bad id probably put him at +1. i never liked the +2 with my d1 motion teams, it probably sounds stupid, but i am much quicker to go with a +2 in flex or triangle than in motion. i think youd be OK if he was a +2 because your team doesn't shoot too many 3s, but i probably wouldn't do it. maybe a +1. i would probably try to get your other guards more involved, it seems like you have 3 guards and 1 big and those guys should be your 4 leaders, with more even distribution than you have now. motion really benefits from a nice smooth distribution, although you shouldn't not give your best guys the ball as a result...

what are your fatigue settings and depth chart? with murdock only having 65 sta and not playing too many minutes, hurd should be getting in the 20s.

i guess like, i keep feeling your problem is you have so many non-scorers, but they mostly don't play in the close games. you basically have 5 guys who can't score at all and a 6th who is close. honestly if you had like 2 of those guys as half way decent players, who could take a little minutes off the starters, allow you to run normal, and who could pick up 5 ppg, i feel like your team would be a lot better. i mean obviously thats not an option, but im struggling to come up with what gives u the best chance with what you have... i keep going back to, your other two guards should be like 10 ppg scorers, you really don't need exceptional per in the motion and your next 2 guards have solid iq, spd, bh, and ath. i would try jacking them up a little more to round things out a bit, and maybe take a fatigue setting off dionne in hopes the minutes go to hudd, and you get better performance out of dionne while he is on the floor.

It amazes me that people don't always put it at +2 with these stats. He is shooting 46% from 2. 38% from 3 is 57% from 2 essentially. Let him jack up the 3s.

this is clearly a matchup thing.  if your opponent has a great defensive player opposite him, then it's a +2.  otherwise it's a +1 or a 0 to make him draw the fouls.  he'll be hurting his team by not playing less than +2 if the opponent's defense is inferior to this guys offense

It's actually not at all like 57% from 2pt, because there is a significant ft disparity for driving vs. launching 3pters.

I would definitely not put him at +2.

I also agree with others who've suggested that the team (and probably Dionne) could benefit from a bit more balance in scoring.

I don't really understand this, yanks. Why do you think that he should jack more 3's if he's facing a great defensive player? A great defensive player will be better at guarding the perimeter as much as he'll be better at guarding against the drive.

Billy, thanks for the insights.  Very good stuff.  I have been playing Dionne at tired, and agree probably need to move him to "getting tired" and try to get Hurd some more minutes.  The slowdown has been because I don't have a lot of depth and I lost my starting C (Sigmund) to a strained ACL and he has been out for 4 games.  Thus, I am forced to start Wiseman and have no depth other than a freshman who is behind both LP's.  So I played slow down more to offset the lack of depth at LP rather than guards.  So, with Sigmund coming back I will probably go back to normal.  It is actually somewhat consoling to know that you, a great coach, don't see any fundamental problems with the way I am running the team.  A few small tweeks and maybe something will change.  Just an odd team.  Great insights and I may try Dionne at PG a bit as you suggested.  We will see what happens with them team, but anything less than a NT bid will be a disappointment for me.  Rebuilding a BCS team is a challenge and you need a little luck and some hot shooting.  Hopefully DIonne can provided the hot shooting part, which will lead to the NT part.  Thanks coach billy and let me know if you get any further thoughts.

Oh, I would not be playing him or anyone at tired. No doubt that's part of the issue, too.

And if you don't make the NT, it'll be in part because you scheduled a few truly terrible BCS sims that will be weighing you down.

Agree girt about the scheduling.  Ending up being a huge downer.  Add to that I have not done well against a few beatable teams.  We will see what happens.

I would put him at +2. I have a D3 PG who has 92 SPD, 90 PER (still black potential), 83, BH (black potential) 79 PASS (black potential).

He is at +2 and he is shooting 46.5% http://www.whatifsports.com/hd/PlayerProfile/Stats.aspx?tid=12504&pid=2072195

1. Having that dude at D3 is different than having his guy at DI. Results will be, too.
2. That guy has low ath, so I wouldn't want him driving all that much.
3. One example never matters, anyway. I could point out guys with 50 pe on some teams shooting over 40% from 3p. Does that mean I should take my guy with 50 pe and start setting him to +1 or +2. You have to follow logic/ratings, not results -- results are hugely impacted by sample size to the point that what a player does over 20 games is not a meaningful sample to draw conclusions from.
5/13/2012 9:13 AM
girt - I think that 20 games could be a meaningful sample because in his 20 games this year he has shot as many threes as he did all of last year through 35 games. I just threw him out there because I had wondered the same thing if I should be trying to get him to the free throw line rather than jacking up threes because I had seen people talk about speed when drawing fouls.
5/13/2012 10:40 AM
that's true to a degree, but as girt often tells me I think this is a case of losing sight of other factors trying to chase an advantage in one. His ath and lp aren't anything great, so driving isn't his primary thing...I'd play him at +1

I'll venture a couple half-baked thoughts.  Alternate starts at the two guard positions between Dionne & Murdock.  Try to be as random as possible (flip a coin), but make sure that Hurd comes off the bench at both guard spots and averages slightly more minutes than Murdock (64 stamina is pretty low for a starter).  IMO Dionne is a much better PG than SG, but switching him between the two randomly will make your team more difficult to predict & defend.

Personally, I would never consider setting anyone to +2, but I would set Dionne, Jones & Combs to +1 (Hurd  too against zone teams).   Also, I'm sure you don't need me to tell you, but once Sigmund is back above 90% he should be your starting center with Mills at PF.

Thanks Rogelio.  Great insights.  I am actually wondering if Sigmund should come back earlier.  He is still at like 80% and I am contemplating bringing him back now.  Not sure if that is smart or not????  Definitely will try the randomness with the guards and getting Hurd more time at back-up.  I appreciate the ideas.  Am I risking a lot bringing a player back who is still at 78 or 80% health?
5/13/2012 5:59 PM
I don't think there is a huge difference at 80 health, but if you bring him back I'd set him to fairly fresh - no reason to compound injury effect with fatigue effects...
