Recruiting at D1 - value of prestige - case study Topic

I think I put 15-20 HV in right off the bat (I think at the 8 or 11am cycle day of signings), ultimately, I went all in by 8pm signing if I recall.  maybe saved some for after signings.

I think the other coach went all-in as soon as I showed up on the board.  He had fended off Indiana and put in 20K (he was 'tight' with the recruit) and dumped another 10k in when I came along

(I didn't see the whole Indiana battle, since I scouted the state later looking for a 'weaker' school to go after - very bad luck, or stupid, on my part)
unfortunately, we don't have that good of an idea about considering credit. admin says it doesn't kick in for a day, although its not clear if that is 24 hours or until the start of day 2 or what. i figure about 24 hours. i tried to do a test once and it failed to show me anything, which makes me question if i have any idea about anything with considering credit... but i digress. if he put that 10k in right when you showed, and you took a while to ramp up, on the 20k, he might have a decent number of cycles on you. there are 8 until signings starts, could be 8, maybe a little less. at 2%/cycle it would give him 16% bonus on 2/3rds of the total effort, which leaves about a 10% net advantage. no idea if thats what it actually was, but i could believe it was that much without too much trouble. maybe its higher? or maybe prestige is lower than 50%? not sure... hard to say, that close to home thing, if thats a no, i can't see stretching the unknowns enough not to conclude something is misunderstood on my part, either prestige or considering credit. but if it was close to home, it would line up a lot better.

thanks for the feedback.  I had not considered things like conference prestige as a factor.  and it is interesting that maybe wanting to be closer would also be a potential factor that had more weight (potentially) than I thought.

when a recruit wants to be close to home, does anyone know how close gains an advantage?

A very interesting case study as this helps me understand things better too. I normally will not battle, but the player was so close to me I had to roll the dice.  Even if I had lost, it would've been a great learning lesson too.

its in the knowledge base, the exact details, but i believe its 200 miles and under, with you receiving more benefit the closer you are. i think far from home works the same way for 500+ miles.

any chance you noticed the player's home/away preference? did he prefer to play close to home?

The only thing I have to add... is that I have nothing to add.

I see these conversations that go into detail on the math work of recruiting and I feel there's an element to the game I don't quite understand. I have some sort of understanding, but it entails an eyeball test on if I can win a battle, rather than figuring out the max amount team X can spend and how many HV or CV I would have to spend in order to win.

This lack of knowledge doesn't prevent me from putting up good teams, but it probably prevents me from putting up great teams as I end up not being the most efficient with my recruiting money.

His preference was to play close to home, but I can't remember who his favorite school was; other than it didn't start out to be Loyola-Chicago!

I do not know how accurate TJ's numbers HERE are, but based on those the total effort was:

B Team:  10782

C- Team:  14713

That would mean, if this is correct, that the C- team put in 1.365 times the effort of the B team.  Or in just HVs, the effort was 98 to 72

It would appear my numbers are a little off......

Not sure why I didn't mention (or notice) this in my earlier response when the thread was first started last fall, but I see the "B" team used essentially all HVs as his main effort even though he was one further zone away than the C- team was.  I'm of the opinion that if I'm not within 200 miles, CVs are the way to go.  The step up in CV cost is only ~25% going from under 200 miles to over 200 miles (and <360 miles), but the step up in HV cost is ~33%.  Clearly in a tight battle like this one, this matters.

Does anyone know if there are varying levels of A+ prestige - in other words, is there like an A++, A+++, for a team that finished the last 2 seasons ranked #1 and #3 and will have 5 draft picks this year?

All prestiges have a range within them, A+ has a MUCH wider range than any other. It has been a while since I had the battle, but I've had an A+ vs A+ battle that turned out more like I would have expected with an A vs B+ battle, and I wasn't nearly as close to the A+ level stewdog had after his 4-peat (and he probably could have been higher if the 4-peat had happened at an A+ baseline rather than Georgia Tech).

Thanks for the info. We ended up with four first round picks and one second round pick, so hopefully we have a high A+. I'll need it with seven openings this year.
