Not sure what is wrong with super classes. If you think it works best then try it and see.
There are lots of issues with it as well. You can't redshirt every year if you are going to purposefully have no openings.
I have had teams in Div-1 where I use 6 openings to recruit 3 players so I can get good players from a B prestige range team.
Different strategies can be used to try to win. I don't think super classes are a panaca.. It seems they have some advantages but also disadvantages. With early entries at division 1, someone who recruits good players can not easily plan to maintain any system of 6 and 0 for a class.
Firstly, I want to note that llama hashed out in wonderful detail why superclasses are unfair in terms of the recruiting advantages...which in my humble opinion is the biggest problem related with the system.
Hughes, At DI, I don't challenge you too much on the fact that it's tougher to cultivate a true advantage using superclasses, but at DII & DIII the barriers you mentioned don't exist. Also, concerning the redshirts, you don't really need to redshirt players in superclasses because with 6 Fr. and 6 So. it's not hard to get every player some playing time...in fact I've seen coaches run uptempo all season with a horrible team like that just so they can maximize player improvement for a whole season or two.
I'm not trying to be condescending when I say this, but I don't need to try it to see that it works extremely well...I can see it not only during recruiting, but in the fact that several teams I know of are practically guaranteed to go to a final four once or twice every four years, if not win a NT during that span.
