99.3 ESPN’s radio host, David Moulton of Miller and Moulton, who also handles play-by-play games for FGCU on ESPN3, had some strong words regarding Northern Kentucky’s impending departure: “If this takes effect immediately, this is a scheduling nightmare. Seven schools now have to find 18-19 non-conference games.

“That’s a staggering number and will lead to a bunch of non-DI games — and terrible RPI’s in many sports. NKU should have had the decency to do what Belmont, Mercer and E. Tennessee did, which was announce your departure effective in a year.”

“Besides, the A-Sun took them three years ago when no other Division I conference wanted them in 2012. That courtesy, and the fact the A-Sun made all NKU teams eligible for the conference tournaments this year — when they did not have to, should have earned the A-Sun, and their seven other schools a one-year reprieve.

“NKU leaving should not have been a surprise — leaving in a month is bush-league.”

I don't have a problem with NKU leaving the A-Sun, but shame on a school leaving that many teams needing to fill schedules this late.  Will the Horizon have to cut any non conference games to fit in an additional conference game (or 2 if home and home)?  Perhaps, that could lead to some games.

Does NJIT now find a home in the A-Sun?  And why not consider UAB if they're kicked out of C-USA?
NJIT would probably  go anywhere they're wanted but I'm sure they prefer to stay in the East.  Their A.D. has had discussions with 7 conferences.  The most-oft heard reason for no conference is they tiny 1,500 seat gym. But they've building a new one that will hold 3,500 and be ready in Sept. 2017

UAB would only go to the Atlantic Sun if they were desperate.  It's a big comedown from hosting Memphis and SMU  to facing Stetson and So.Carolina-Upstate.

Any spot UAB lands will be a bit of a let down, wouldn't it?

Personally, I think they'll bring football back

UAB announced that football will return in 2016.  They will retain their coach but several key players have already trasferred.

The Atlantic Sun is talking expansion to replace the departed Northern Kentucky. Rumored schools include:

North Alabama ( would be moving up from Div II )
TAMU Commerce ( would be moving up from Div II )
Georgia Regents ( would be moving up from Div II )
NJIT ( currently Div 1 independent)

Georgia Regents is the  weird new name for Augusta State.

"Hey Bubba, what about this idea?  Let't change the name of Augusta State and name it for our committee!

Students and community leaders were upset over the name change, favoring U. of Augusta.

Incidently, the first diplomas issued by the new GRU  contained a misspelling of the word  'college'

Texas Pan American also has a new name. The school merged with Texas-Brownsville and is now caled Texas-Rio Grande Valley.  They wil remain in the WAC

The new colors for UTRGV will be UT orange, green and blue.  They wil be the Vaqueros, which was immediately protested as culturally racist and sexist.   A bill inroduced in the Texas legislature would require the student body to vote on the names Broncos (Pan American's mascot); Ocelots, or some other name nominated by the students.  In February the bil was referred to the Education Committee.

My uncle is a retired prof from Augusta State.  The name change was not a popular one to say the least.

New Jersey Institute of Technology has joined the Atlantic Sun Conference, effective July 1, replacing Northern Kentucky.

That will be some crazy travel costs for them.  May as well rent rooms in Florida and have all players take correspondence classes during the season.

It's gotta be a relief compared to their former conference, the Great West.  NJIT was a member from 2008-2013, along with North Dakota, South Dakota, Houston Baptist, Texas-Pan American, Utah Valley, and Chicago State
