What constitutes "Best"? Topic

Quoted from Italyprof above - "So leaving these threads, I will mention an interesting conversation I  had years ago with an anarchist girlfriend, once a very well-known figure in the punk movement in first LA and then NY. She said "we all had this idea that the revolutionary thing about punk was that anyone could do it. It wasn't restricted only to people with a certain talent and we were breaking down the musician/fan/spectator hierarchies. But the fact is, the Sex Pistols really were a whole lot better than everyone else.""

I am a survivor of the late 70s/early 80s LA punk scene; I practically lived at the Whiskey.  Saw bands like X and Black Flag when they were opening at podunk clubs strewn throughout the Southland.  I've seen the Dead Kennedys more times than I can remember, definitely more than I've seen any other band.  Was at the Ramones at the Palladium, where I swear there was as much law enforcement as concertgoers.  Since IP posted the above, I've been wracking my brain for a pithy response, and it doesn't exist.  The Sex Pistols really were the best - and in a genre that didn't give a carp about the concept of 'best', 'greatest', etc.

Man, has this thread gone off track...

Any constitution contains a well-worded definitive
definition, sprinkled here & there... Right ???...

Pertaining to the question, "What Constitutes The
Best ?", can we really truly establish that 'the best'
will (heretofore) be defined as meaning only one ?

Each & every one of us is a 'wee-bit' handicapped,
in that we have only 5 senses to make such a lone,
single decision with...

Losing the vanity does (however) help... It rids this
thread of the "baker's dozen's" of preferences, that
does little, to prolong what should become known
from here on out as another "never-ending" thread.

Narrow it down, man... Filet your typed choices... It
is defined here as "THE BEST"... It's contained in the
title, this thread's constitution... Just one, the best...

Carry on...

I believe that Babe Ruth is the greatest baseball PLAYER of all time. Not only is he a top 5 hitter of all time, he was also a Cy Young award winning pitcher. As for the greatest HITTER of all time, that goes to Ty Cobb over Ted Williams and for greatest PITCHER I believe that is Walter Johnson over Pedro Martinez. Pedro played during a time of short ballparks and a lot of juiced hitters. Johnson played during the time of no gloves or bad fielding and catchers didn't have the best arms. I could go on but I'm running out of time before I have to leave

Determining the best is practically an impossible task. But it's enjoyable to do so and no doubt if you created a poll among baseball fans The Babe would probably win hands down. The fact that he was a superb pitcher to begin his career and then changed the game with his hitting makes him unique and he will live on in legendary form as long as the sport exists.

However, he also played in an era where the game wasn't as specialized as it is today. He was out of shape and likely if he is today who he was in his own playing days his career may not last 5 years. In SIM we can put his numbers up against the numbers of today's ballplayers but who knows whether that is an accurate indication of performance. Today's game has pitcher throwing all kinds of pitches, shifting defenses, 95 mph pitches, and there has been 80 years of advancements in the understanding of the game.

I still chose Ruth as the best player of all time given these factors. Ruth embodied all that us baseball fans love about the game. He was a hero who loved the children who adored him. He called his shot in the world series. He drank and ate to excess and still hit the ball a mile. He gave back to the game as much as it gave to him. He had a rough upbringing he overcame and he became the king of his sport. The list of what makes The Babe great and possibly the best goes on and on.
