I think it takes a while to build a rapport. If you really care, don't wait until the last minute after the game to say something. Say something in the middle of the season, and if they respond then go from there.

You'll be calling them a "piece of sh-t", as a term of endearment in no time.

Ive been attempting to talk to the newbie that joined my conference, so we are the only two. Dude never replies, wish I could throw some friendly advice or point him to a mentor because he's making some questionable decisions that are hurting his team more than helping him.
