Round 1 90M Roster Analysis, 2018 Topic

So I'm trying to figure out which of these stats best correlates to wins in the leagues. My first thought was PA would be worth looking at, and most of the teams doing the best are in the upper third in PA (jbohrman a very notable exception). It appears not taking too many IP also helped, which makes sense because you'd be reducing the quality of the innings you paid for and didn't need.

All of this comes back to making me wonder how important being able to manage fatigue is, and having the experience of doing it enough to avoid any wasted salary can make a massive difference. I took the 4th-most PA, clearly concerned about excess fatigue from all the scoring. My offense is doing fine, but if I'd been able to make my pitching just a little stronger by saving some of that money ...

Without running a regression on the data it's tough to say for sure, but I will say that none of my hitters have been at 100% since game 15 or so. Same with the 65M league.

Errors and minus plays not as plentiful as most people feared. It's my best team and I overdrafted by 75-100 innings and PA. Most teams drafted more innings 1600 IP is plenty and those who stayed at that level should be doing well.

Great stuff. Thanks ozomatli.

I wish you could include the average with each of those tables.

Also, K/BB ratio would be cool.

And you could include the team's current winning% with each table. Or show a table sorted by team's winning% along with where they rank (or stdev) with each of those stats. Maybe that will help us learn which of those categories is most important.

Ordered by the absolute value of the correlation to wins so far. A positive number in the second column means that more of the stat in question correlates with more wins, while a negative number in that column means that less of the stat in question correlates with more wins.

Lots of interesting observations from those correlations, but it's worth calling out that none of those correlations are strong. Even the strongest ones there are only decent at best. But, some things I noticed:
  • Spending on offense rather than pitching may have been the better strategy
  • Deadball players reign supreme... at least somewhat... for both hitters (despite the worse defense) and pitchers
  • True to the name, putting the ball in play is the way to go, though pitcher Ks are still too expensive to be worth it
  • Triples are the superior XBH type
  • People potentially overspent and overshot on IP but, overall, IP and WHIP individually had little impact. You could win by emphasizing either
  • Even in Coors, HRs were still not worth it

I used the formula from the pitch count thread: https://www.whatifsports.com/forums/Posts.aspx?topicID=154851

And added each owner's rank by pitches as well as by innings. So loyalcanuck drafted the 2nd fewest innings, but because he had a 9.87 K9 (and a 4.55 BB/9!) he has the 17th most pitches available.

Now, his pitchers will throw more pitches, so it's not totally a 1:1 relationship, but it's interesting.
10/1/2018 10:13 AM
Any idea if the innings and/or pitches correlates to success at this point?
10/1/2018 12:40 PM
IP does not (see above). Not sure about pitches
10/1/2018 1:40 PM
It sure seems that those who invested more financially in their pitching (assuming quality goes with that) are doing better. Top notch pitching would get you a bit further in games, which should stretch out your entire pitching staff over a whole season and tax everyone else. By this point, it seems those teams are shutting others down much more effectively, with Coors helping their hitters provide enough offense to win.
10/1/2018 2:10 PM
Yep, that lines up with what we saw above. One of the stronger correlations (though, in objective terms, still not strong) is a negative relationship with how much an owner spent on hitting.
