Practice for Off/Def Topic

I have a question along a similar line to this one. I took over a new school and want to change the offensive and defensive sets from Triangle/Press to Flex/Half Press/Man. I intend to have them practice those at 20/10/20. I think I read somewhere that there is no IQ benefit to running a particular set in a game. The players only raise their IQ from practice. Is that correct? If so, I'll continue to run the Triangle/Press in games until their Flex/HCP/Man IQ's get better from practice. Do I have this right? It doesn't "feel" right. I would think players would learn at least "something" from playing the set and not just practicing it.
That’s correct, IQ is built by practice, modified by HS GPA and work ethic; it is not directly affected by games.

Thanks, shoe.

I'm way different. I do 29/29 at High DI. 0nly recommends 30/30, and I switch every year depending on the team I had. I really wanted to go 23/23 and develop my sophomores this year, but I decided to really go for the NC possibility (hoping at least F4) this year and concede being a truly top team next year.

Combination of nearly capped players already and trying to max IQ quickly because it makes people way better players without moving them up on the Big Board leads me to rarely go below 25/25.

I can't speak for others. But I never knew 0nly to recommend 30/30. I thought he always used the 25/25. Was this 30/30 idea specifically used during a transition from one set to another? Or at all times?

Also, I could see using higher numbers at D1. Because the players don't have as much room for growth. But 30 seems like a high number for D2/D3. And I'm a BIG believer in IQ. I support IQ growth as much as any coach here

Interesting that cubcub changes sets that often. It obviously works for him. But neither of you disagrees that ONLY practice improves the IQ, right? I'd sacrifice a few wins early and change now if I thought it would help by seasons end.

Playing the set will not increase IQ in that set. No reason to switch *except* in recruiting; players you recruit for next season may prefer the set you’re switching to, and it could give you a slight recruiting advantage. On the other hand, other players may prefer the set you’re playing now. Most (but not all) players with a preference for a set will come in knowing that set, so there is a *slight* advantage to switching for recruiting purposes. But never enough to justify it on its own if you have a decent team, IMO, because losing games you might otherwise win can hurt seeding and ultimately prestige.

Reading cubcub's response brings up another question. What is the prevailing wisdom on the best way to change offensive and defensive sets? Dump a bunch of practice points in early (like 30/15/30 for the Flex/HCP/Man I want to change to) and sacrifice some individual stat development, for the higher IQ early? Or just go with a normal practice time (like the 20/10/20 I'm doing now) to maximize player development earlier and get to the IQ when we get there? Or is it really just personal preference on how quickly you want the set change to come about?
