Despite foul trouble from his top offensive threat in the lineup, Brett Cooper managed 10 assists tonight bringing his career total to 812 assists as he inches his way to the record 846 career assists. He completes his regular season career tomorrow night at home against Emory & Henry. He should compete in 3 Conference Tournament Games and if he averages 8.5 assist per game, he will tie the record in the Conference Tournament Championship game. He must average 6.8 to break the record in the first round of the National Tournament and 5.7 to break the record if EMU reaches the second round. The coaching staff feels confident, but is trying to keep Cooper relaxed and not focusing on the record in his presence. Athletic Director Wes Moses was unavailable for comment.

Brett Cooper dished out his third consecutive double digit assist performance tonight against Emory & Henry putting himself 24 assists short of the Naismith All Time assist record. With an almost guaranteed 3 games in the Conference Tournament and a 1st round National Tournament game locked, Cooper now needs to average 6 assists per game to tie the record. The coaching staff feels that barring an injury or extremely unlikely string of consecutive foul trouble games, Cooper should definitely break the record before the National Tournament begins. Athletic Director Wes Moses was unavailable for comment.

Eastern Mennonite easily beat Hampden-Sydney by 21 as Brett Cooper barely missed a 4th consecutive double digit assist game. His career assist total was brought to 831 with his game high 9 assists as he now trails Wooster's Michael Erby's assist record by 15. Cooper stated he is hoping he can break the record in the Conference Tournament so he can focus on the team performance in the National Tournament without the pressure from fans and teammates to break the record against a much stronger opponent. Cooper's adoptive father Larry Cooper attributes his son's success to the hard work and dedication studying the game of basketball religiously. "There isn't an inch of the basketball court that Brett hasn't memorized." Despite his success, not everyone is sold on how talented Brett Cooper is. Lavar Ball is quoted as saying, "Eastern Mennonite could have a team full of Brett Coopers and any one of my boys would whip their butt 5 on 1." Athletic Director Wes Moses was unavailable for comment.

Emory and Henry proved to be no match for Eastern Mennonite University in the ODAC Conference Semi-finals tonight as EMU wins in a rout 96-65 as PG sensation Brett Cooper recorded 11 assists. What many had hoped would be a battle of two of the better PGs in the conference became a no contest as Emory & Henry starter Robert Turk fouled out in only 3 minutes of play. Cooper moved within 4 assists of the all time career record and should overtake the lead over former Wooster player Michael Erby's current record of 846 assists. Cooper now has a career 841 assists and is expected to tie or break the record tomorrow night against 18-10 Lynchburg. EMU is the overwhelming favorite to win the Conference Tournament championship which would be their 4th consecutive title. Since taking over the starting role as EMU PG, the Royals Brett Cooper is now 75-0 against conference opponents. Cooper deflects much of the praise toward him and gives it back to his teammates saying, "I only deserve partial credit toward this record. My job is to get the ball to my teammates in a position to make a basket, but if they don't put the ball through the nets, I don't get an assist." EMU is hoping to impress the selection committee to rank them high enough that they are able to avoid the top 2 ranked teams, Ozarks and Millsaps, until the final 4. EMU coach Travis Dowdy is quoted as believing Ozarks and Millsaps are the overwhelming favorites to win the title, saying "The University conference is easily the strongest Division 3 conference and those teams are the best of the best. Both teams easily defeated EMU during the preseason and while EMU relied heavily on 6 freshmen in those games, coach Dowdy feels it will take a near perfect performance by the Royals to pull an upset over those teams should they face each other in the National Tournament despite vast improvement of his freshman class. EMU Athletic Director Wes Moses was unavailable for comment.

It was Brett Cooper night at in Virginia as the Royals of Eastern Mennonite University defeated Lynchburg easily 88-67 to win their 4th consecutive Conference Tournament. The Royals as a team struggled out of the gate, however Brett Cooper continued to shine even as the team had difficulty stopping Lynchburg's offensive attack in the first few minutes. Entering the game needing 4 assists to tie the all-time record, Cooper tied the record 6 minutes and 47 seconds into the game and then took solo possession of the record after 8 minutes and 50 seconds of play. He continued his game dominance having one of his finest games of his collegiate career finishing with 14 points 10 assists and 3 steals to win the player of the game honors on his historic night. Cooper heads into the National Tournament with 852 assists becoming the first person in Naismith history to have over 850 assists.

Despite Coach Dowdy's hopes, the tournament selection committee placed Eastern Mennonite in a difficult bracket. Eastern Mennonite was placed in a bracket with 2 of the tougher teams in the tournament. Millsaps, the #1 seed, easily beat EMU in game 1 of the preseason 80-69 and #3 seed, LeTourneau is one of the toughest teams on paper and should be able to challenge EMU in the Sweet 16 should both teams progress to that point in the tournament. First round opponent Albion does not appear to pose a significant threat to upset EMU, however it should be noted that Coach Dowdy has been SIMied before in the first round of the D3 Naismith National Tournament, under his tdowdy3 account, when his powerhouse North Carolina Wesleyan was easily defeated in Season 3 while following a national championship and facing an inferior opponent. Dowdy was quoted after the game, "it's easy to look past the first round and think about the march to a championship, but you have to beat the team in front of you before you can march forward. If you are looking past your current foe, you're an easy target to get shot in the back." When asked if he will be focusing on his assist total moving forward Cooper replied, "From this point forward it's not about my numbers, and the only number that is important is the final score. If we win and I finish with 0 points, 0 assists and 10 turnovers, the game will not be a failure to me. I haven't been to the Elite 8 and our team goal is to reach that round and then to advance further to win the national championship. We have our eyes locked on that prize. It's nice to be able to go into the tournament with the record in hand and not to have the pressure for my teammates and fans possibly hurting the overall team performance. Records be damned, I just want a win."

This is EMU's highest National Tournament seed since season 41 when coach boork led the Royals to the championship game as a #1 seed. This marks the 8th time in Naismith history that EMU has entered the NT with a #1 or 2 seed and they are seeking their 2nd National Championship. Team MVP Daniel Franklin feels the team is up for the challenge and although he's never had the pressure of leading his team in a game in a win or go home environment, "We are going to win as a team or lose as a team. We aren't going to do anything crazy like Start Freshman Cruz Larrabee and give him 100% of the offense. That would just be crazy. No one in their right mind would pull a stunt like that in the National Tournament." EMU Athletic Director Wes Moses was available for comment but just sat there at his desk mumbling something about his desk being moved to the basement and his red Swingline stapler.

Congrats! And nice Office Space reference.

Albion proved to be more than a handful for 2 seeded Eastern Mennonite University Saturday night nearly pulling off a massive upset. Eastern Mennonite Coach Travis Dowdy was in shell shock for most of the game as his team continued to shoot well as they have all season, but still unable to pull away despite playing well overall. Albion’s full court press defense gave the Royals all they could handle for the majority of the night. Despite going to the free throw line seemingly nonstop throughout the evening, the Royals failed to capitalize on the constant foul trouble for Albion by only making 30 of their 47 free throws and had to play 5 extra minutes before they were able to pull away in victory. Senior guard Daniel Franklin paced the team with 31 points and lifted the Royals past a season high 23 turnovers. Brett Cooper despite an unusual 4 turnovers against the press, added an additional 8 assists to his record total and now has a career 860 assists.

Eastern Mennonite University now faces Trinity (TX) out of the University Conference in the second round. Despite being the underdog, Trinity triumphed against their 1st round opponent while also having to go into overtime to do so. Dowdy mentioned afternoon the game that Trinity is as tough a 10 seeded team as there could possibly be, and added that if they were in any other conference, they would have 5 losses or less. He stated, “We aren’t underestimating how good an opponent we are facing tonight, we will have our hands full. If we play like we did tonight, we aren’t going to the Sweet 16.” “It has been an incredible journey and I hope we can continue. We have a tremendous group of juniors and seniors and it would be heartbreaking to see them walk off the court tonight with a loss. But this is Whatifsports, and anything can happen on any given night.”

When asked to comment, EMU Athletic Director Wes Moses said, “And I said, I don't care if they lay me off either, because I told, I told Bill that if they move my desk one more time, then, then I'm, I'm quitting, I'm going to quit. And, and I told Don too, because they've moved my desk four times already this year, and I used to be over by the window, and I could see the squirrels, and they were merry, but then, they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler, but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn't bind up as much, and I kept the staples for the Swingline stapler and it's not okay because if they take my stapler then I'll set the building on fire...”
