Vuckovich was the worst in a multi-year string of really bad Cy Young selections, especially in the AL. See also Stone over Norris (1980), Fingers over McCatty (1981), Hoyt over Quiz or Stieb in 1983. What's really surprising is that the AL voters of that era were perfectly willing to give the award to a reliever (Fingers in 81, Hernandez in 84) but somehow couldn't see fit to give it to Quisenberry in either 82 or 83. Or Dave Stieb, who almost certainly should have won multiple Cy Youngs in the early 80s.
Or maybe Jack Morris. While I am not a particularly huge fan of Jack Morris, one of the biggest critiques against his HOF induction was his failure to win the Cy Young award. But he was a strong candidate for several years in the 80s, and could have easily been given the award in 1981, 83, 84...maybe more than once.
