From what I've noticed, the "wants to play" preference is related to recruiting and not redshirting. If you promise 10 mins the pref turns to "good" if you promise 15+ mins the pref turns to "very good".
If you promise any player minutes or a start they will not be happy with a redshirt, regardless of their playing preference.
If the player has the pref, but you don't make any promises, they have the same chance of being ok with a redshirt as a player without the pref.
Again, this is just from what I've noticed, I could be wrong.
You can give them a redshirt risk free like sol says above. If they take a huge WE hit just remove the redshirt right away, but I do not believe their reaction is related to their playing time pref specifically.
This is all correct - but I suspect that pref for playing time has SOME correlation w not tending to like a redshirt.
Note - I said that carefully - its about odds. It isnt that it means he for sure wont take the RS. Is he clearly the worst player on the roster - that helps get a yes. Is he a recruit who is thrilled to be recruited by you? That for sure helps the inform of redshirt go okay,
