yeah shoe, all that would qualify as the kind of team planning considerations i'm talking about, but also like - you want at least 2 guys who can play point. 3 per scorers if you can get it, at least 2, and so forth - to each their own on what their plan is, but we all still need to check certain boxes to make our team work. i still see things all the time, even on really good teams, where its like a 3 man class of 3 bigs, and its like yikes... that is just devastating. you can't get everything you need with a class like that, but its definitely easier to tolerate with a full roster.
anyway if you have like 7-10 non-freshman instead of perhaps 5-8 with a couple walkons a year, it should be a heck of a lot easier to have a full starting line and a complement of a couple key non-freshman backups. lot easier to have a starting pg in the mix all 4 seasons instead of 2 or 3 every 4, that sort of thing. maybe there's an 'extra' big on the roster, but that doesn't necessarily mean you are short a guard, because of the full roster.
the biggest risk though, in going with the full m2m/zone rosters and the team building benefits they bring, is that folks will put off - perhaps forever - the plunge into the high d1 recruiting waters. its kinda brutal out there, but you sort of need to just jump in and learn to swim. walkons are part the thing that pushes you into the waters, and part swimmies.
