25 "Any Position" draft strategy? Topic

To each their own. I build mostly through the draft and stand by the best player available strategy.

I always set "Any" to 3-6. I try to win minor league games to help development, so I want to get a good balance of useful org filler pitchers and position players. To that end, I also set SS/2B to at least 3 or 4, and 1B/3B/LF/RF to 1 or 0. Defense is very important in the minors, and drafting a bunch of shortstops, even if they can't hit, will help your actual prospects develop.

Is there really any meaningful difference between setting 10 ANY and 25 ANY. Either way, you're going to take best player available for at least 10 rounds (likely longer since they'll be able to slot in at other positions). After that, I'm not drafting a ML ballplayer anyway, so I'd rather spare myself the headache of figuring out what tryout players to get and get slightly more useful players in the draft to fill out the roster.

I don't know that it's "meaningful" but in the two "25 Any" drafts I've done I've gotten a ton of pitchers even though my top-100 was evenly mixed between pitchers and position players...had to go to tryout camp to fill out rookie league roster.

Thanks Scot, to clarify, I'm a proponent of setting 8 or 10 any, instead of 25. The argument for 25 ANY is to ensure you get the best player each time. But we all know we're not getting a MLer (except by random chance or DITR) after Round 8 anyway. So why is there any advantage to getting a 5th LF at that spot instead of the C or SS or SP you really need to field a roster. Yeah, the LF might be "better", but considering that they're both topping out at AA, I'd rather have the positional variety.
