Prof I thought you were an economics teacher based on some of your writings. I have a masters degree and you’ve written some things I had no clue. . I would have needed a translator.
Well, I teach International Political Economy, Political Sociology and Organizational Behavior, as well as International Relations. I don't do Economics as such, which is highly mathematical, and well, mostly wrong.

I use to teach 6 graders ancient cultures. Egypt, Greece, Rome, Mayans, Aztecs, Incas, Samurai Era in Japan. We spent Sept with an Atlas till they realized there was more to the world then their little town. Many started out not knowing the difference between states, countries, and continents. I know they learned somethings because many high school students came back and talked about it, especially the simulation game War Lords of Japan.

Tho I will inevitably end up with the Phillies or Senators, count me in. Regular themes are not working for me right now.

Can you only select your core 4 players from players that are available? The questions from eman has me slightly confused. Using example two as a baseline:

Example 2: Tommie Agee, 1966 - the New York Mets owner (when we have expanded etc. by that time) must decide whether to:
1. list Tommie Agee as a Core 4 player, in which case they can continue to do so through his good seasons like 1969-1971, or else, if they do not also continue to list him as Core 4 for 1967 or for 1968, when Agee hit .234 and .217 respectively, Agee returns to the draft pool and cannot be kept as a keeper as a drafted player could.
or
2. to try to take their chances on getting Agee in the draft to have him as a keeper.

So let's say Agee isn't selected as a Core 4 for the Mets when he's a rookie and is drafted by Chicago.

1968 comes around and as the Mets owner, could I list Agee as a Core 4 for the Mets team? Essentially stealing him away from Chicago?

Or can you only list a player as a Core 4 if: 1) Theyre available to be drafted (not on anyones keeper list) or 2) It's their first season eligible to be a core 4 for that team?

Another example:

Lets pretend we started in 1924, and after the 24 season Boston lists Red Ruffing as a Core 4 player. Following the 1929 season both of these statements woul be true if I'm understanding it correctly: 1) Ruffing would not be on Boston's roster going into the 1930 season and would go into the available players list for the rookie draft (so long as point 2 doesn't happen). 2) Could be listed as a Core 4 player by New York and would remove him from the available players list.

No you have it exactly right chargingryno, in your first example, Agee COULD be "stolen" away from Chicago in that case. So drafting players that might have been central to another team, that might be one of the four players in the future could be risky. On the other hand, the Cubs could then get say, Fergie Jenkins or Ron Santo or Glenn Beckett from another team the same way.

Your example of Ruffing is a little more complicated. Ruffing actually pitched 24 innings for Boston in 1930, and pitched for the Yankees as well that year. So he is NOT eligible to be a Core 4 player for either team for 1930. He has both Boston and NY iterations for that year in the WIS database. So he cannot be Core 4 for anyone. If he has been listed previously as Core 4 by Boston, he does indeed go back into the draft pool. If he has instead never been so and was drafted by another team altogether he can be kept as a keeper at least for 1930, until the Yankees owner might list him as Core 4 in a season where he played only for NY.

Welcome Brian1648 (reference to Westphalia?), and tridentric !

Sorry for the delay. I am without my own computer which is in the shop as the battery died on me. So limited online time these days.

We are up to 8 now.

Great questions everyone. Yes, the idea is that a team CAN lose a player that they have had on their roster through the Core 4 selection process at the start of each year before the keepers lists and new player draft. But they also can have any player as Core 4 that they had on their roster in RL all season long as well, even if that player has been with another team previously.

This means that drafting involves interesting strategy: go for a great player figuring that they won't be better than the 5th best on a team for a while and at least you get some of their good seasons before you lose them, or try to draft everyone's 5th best player from the get-go. And keepers - limited to ten (10) each year, are shaped around the Core 4 and what you need beyond that. Then you draft. Should be fun. And anxiety-creating, cause we will all need something to do that without Covid and Trump to scare the wits out of us, no?

I’m in.
but I would like to clear something up regarding the example of Tommie Agee being drafted by chicago. Actually, Tommie was a white sock as a rookie in 66
and became a met in 68. Doesn’t that mean he can be a core player for chi in 66-67?

Yes, good point, bad example on my part. Nolan Ryan then, same explanation - if the Mets don't draft him when he is a rookie, but want him in 1969, they just have to declare him a Core 4 player at that point. But in 1972, the Angels could declare him Core 4. If neither of those teams declare him Core 4 during any season in which he played exclusively for them, same with his later teams, he can be drafted, even made a keeper, until and unless later declared Core 4 by his RL team.

Let's remember, despite our examples above, that most of the Core 4 will usually be long-term players that starred for a team, so most of the time there will be considerable continuity. Only unfrequently is it likely that a team will lose a good player that they have previously had as a keeper to a team that lists him newly as Core 4, though it will happen sometimes.
