And of course, salary doesn't fully correlate with the quality of the free agent. Maybe I could have spent more on my 2016 NL pitching free agent, but it's hard to beat 2016 Kershaw for quality.
Also, need matters. I could have spent $15.4 million on 1980 George Brett, except I needed a quality SP instead, so only spent $9.0 million on Mike Caldwell. It's possible some of the $3-4 million high quality RPs selected were needed more than a slighty above average $6-7M starting pitcher.
That being said, is Ray Searage the absolute best use of the valuable free agent spot? He has the lowest ERC# among pitchers available, but what about quantity of innings?
