At least I can take some solace knowing that my '56 Yankees were not only extremely unlucky in close games (up until recently, they were positive run differential and 22 games below .500), but they are also have the biggest underachieving offense in the entire league. They have three of the league's top 20 underachieving batters.
In fact, pretty much all of my teams with poor W-L records are near the top in underachieving offenses (relative to the normalized real life stats).
