With all the variables I figure this whole process is nothing but a crapshoot. 16 different players to select from. 16+ different seasons of each one. Trying to keep your salary down so you can have an edge in draft position. Trying to get 9 good teammates. Making sure you get enough of the good versions of the 16 main players to help those 9 teammates. Trying to stay under the Cap. Hoping you don't wait 1 round too long to take that 1 player you are planning on....

For me, my biggest mistake was taking '11 Plank.   I went cheap early (cheap versions of Wynn, Sutton, Caminiti).  I missed all Plank's good seasons.  I had my eye on 1905 so I could also use Rube Waddell.  With those two plus 2002 Pedro and Lowe, I'd have my 4 SP's all set.  But I didn't want to take the 10M cap hit so early, so I decided to take 69 McMahon (for Marichal), then the cheapest Plank available (7M of suckiness)... just to lock down C, 2B, 3B (Cochrane, Collins, Baker).

As it turned out, 05 Plank went really late in the draft.  And there were other decent teammate choices at 2B (i.e., a couple of nice Jackie Robinson seasons) and 3B (George Brett, Morgan Ensberg, Eric Chavez). 

The other mistake I made was passing Yount's last really good OF season by taking a mediocre Ozzie Smith instead.  Sure enough, Yount went right after that, and I was kicking myself.  At least I now have a $4.6M defensive replacement.

I have about $13mil in wasted salary between Lowe, Ozzie and Biggio, though Biggio is my backup catcher.  I think my best pick turned out to be '41 Foxx...a cheap but effective season with .300 BA and 100+ walks, and he brought along '41 Williams.

I really feel that this was one of my worst SIM drafts ever. I just totally messed up all the way around.

Schwarze however, did his usual excellent job of running this draft. Thanks, Jeff!

If you're anything like me, that's a good sign.  The success of my teams is always inversely proportional to how good I feel about them after I'm done drafting.

I felt pitching was going to be a major issue this time with the nominees. None of the 4 starters had multiple knockout seasons to pick from so I went with Plank early to have access to Bender, Morgan, Krause, not to mention Collins at 2B if I needed him. I had considered the 05 version for the same Waddell reason you did Jeff. All 4 relievers had a ton of cheap seasons so figured they would be easier to fit in at the end. After I knew I had my starters locked up with my pick of '09 Plank, along with '97Pedro, I concentrated on the hitters. Wanted the '32 Foxx but waited 1 round too many. '10Votto or '98Bagwell will play 1B. My biggest question mark is my outfield. I've got '95 Gwynn, my nominee '97 White,(not that good) and a 3 prong approach with '61Snider, '61RonFairly, and possibly 1B '98Bagwell. Usually a 1B will play decent in RF. If I had to change 1 pick it probably would have been taking Biggio in the 3rd round when I already had '09Collins locked in to play 2B if needed. My biggest fear at that time was running out of cap room so I opted for a good Biggio and scrapped Collins. Now I'm second guessing that one...

Yount and Plank will see some action, but I reduced their PA and IP based on estimated usage.  Guys I rostered who won't be used much include...

Torre, Biggio, Caminiti, Wynn and Sutton.
