Rule V League - Season #31 Draft Thread Topic

Here's a possible modification to the draft.\

Instead of the draft order based on cumulative W-L % from 1969-2010, use the historical Rule V W-L%.  So, the D'backs would draft 1st and the Astros would draft last.  That would really shake up the team selection process a bit, don't you think?

Interesting schwarze.  The Red Sox and Giants would seem to benefit greatly from this move (teams with pretty good depth but would improve the quality of their draft picks) while teams like the Marlins, Cubs and Expos would certainly seem to take a hit.

That's an interesting thought.  One downside to it, as an example, the Phillies are usually a playoff contender, but have a poor overall winning % because of one 29-133 season that was obviously a huge outlier.

Good point.  To be fair, I should remove the seasons with the high and low win total from each team to eliminate this type of situation.

This table removes the seasons with the high and low W-L records and recalculates...  I re-sorted in reverse order (and show the rank, including the previous rank before the removal of high/low seasons)

A team like the Diamondbacks is the perfect reason to consider this draft order.  They have a decent historical W-L percentage, but that doesn't factor in that they have way fewer years to choose players from.

Hmmm...definitely something to ponder.
2/18/2011 6:05 PM
I like it, seems like it might be cool to try it out a few times to see how it works.  I actually have thought about taking the Dbacks before but just couldn't pull the trigger because of where they were drafting.
2/18/2011 8:10 PM
Something else to consider...  The above order will actually change a bit, after factoring in the results of season 31.  So, in esssence, each season's results will modify the rankings and the draft order will continually change.  If Boston and SF are undervalued now, then a couple of good seasons will move them down in the draft order.
2/18/2011 8:12 PM
I'd be willing to give that a try for next season.  You're right about the D-backs...they're probably the team that suffers the most with the current setup, while the Mariners probably benefit the most, as they were so awful through the late 70's and 80's.
2/19/2011 1:10 PM
that would be overcompensating. a teams result depends on their draft position. maybe average the two numbers.

another method is to draft in reverse order of team selection. have a pre-draft to select the order of team selection.

not only do I give MAJOR props for the guys who took their time on this, but also, I LOVE the new draft theory.  Removing the best ever season / worst ever, gives this Rule V a good little make over!! I would be for it

I understand that using the historical win% as a new basis for the draft order is not perfect... but the idea is that after a few iterations under the new format, the "bargain teams" will start to drop in the draft order.  And it will keep things fresh as the draft order will continually change from season to season.

I like that Rule V draft change suggestion, too.  Would be interesting to see tried for a few seasons.
