Progressive league owners - ideas needed Topic

Good work, firecapt. Much appreciated.

Someone made a suggestion earlier in this thread that I feel bears repeating - it would really be good if site staff joined a progressive and stayed on for a couple of seasons. That's something they can do now, and it'll give them a much better feel for what the issues are.

I play mostly progressives but I find the use of the forums for keepers, trades and drafting to be extremely frustating. The forums work but not well. We've all been part of leagues where the available player list is incomplete or wrong. Keepers are posted in 24 different styles. Misspellings of names. Players on the DL are missed when returning the next season. Confusion over draft picks traded. Draft order postings. I could go on and on. Let me also say that every Commissioner that I have had dealings with have done an outstanding job. This is not an easy thing to do. This would only make their job easier.

What I would like to see is something like this.

1. When keepers need to be posted instead of posting in the forums, your team could be already connected to our league. All players would be automaticlly moved up 1 year. DL players would be listed but marked as DL. You could then cut any players from your roster.

2. Available player lists could be generated for on screen viewing or printing.

3. A updated draft feature would be used to conduct the draft. The present WIS draft program is not bad but has some faults. No ability to do proxies or no draft quere. (I have not used the WIS draft utility in a while, if these things have been added, sorry)

4. (more draft features) The ability to view instant player availability lists, all team rosters and needs. The draft utility could handle traded picks, time slots and sitemailing upcoming picks. No more picking out of order or selecting a previously picked player.

5. At anytime during the process you can pay or transfer an empty draft center team to cover your team.

Anyways, thats my thougths. Please add any ideas and wish lists.

Thanks,

Firecapt

Please... No names named here... It's pretty easy to figure out what league I'm talking about, but everyone is acting in what they consider to be good faith, and there's no point in trashing anyone's reputation. Thanks.

Ok... Here's the situation. I am neither owner A nor owner B, both of whom (though) are in my division (just mentioning that in case you think I'm trying to alter competitive balance). Both of these guys are outstanding owners in the sim, each has way more champoinships than I do.

Last season, Owner A posted his keeper list. He had a useful backup OF in Lee Maye on it. The commish of the league eventually built the draft list for the league, and he INCLUDED Lee Maye on the available player list Nobody noticed this until late in the draft, when Owner B drafted Lee Maye at the very end of the draft, when he was making up a bunch of missed picks.

Because owner A had already entered his team, he wasn't watching the thread any longer when owner B drafted his player.

A few weeks into the season, owner A was playing owner B and noticed that Lee Maye was on the Owenr B's team... He called him out on this, and the whole situation was discovered.

At that time the commish made a decision... Both teams could keep Lee Maye this season, but the rights to him in future years went to Owner B, who drafted him in this years draft. The commish felt that the error was on the part of owner A for not catching the commish's mistake in posting the available players.

Admittedly, Lee Maye is NOT an important player. But precedents are important... I'd hate to have a similar situation with an important player.

Ok... here's the poll....

1 question

Who should get the rights to Lee Maye

(1) - Owner A, who drafted him originally, and listed him correctly as a keeper

or

(2) - Owner B, who drafted him last year after seeing him on the available player listing

Thanks for your input.

Lee May belongs to Owner A.

It's pathetic that the Commissioner blamed Owner A for his mistake.

bump for Proxy mix up in Reach For Tomorrow 1933/1973 Progressive Draft

I feel that this situation has not been handled well. By all parties involved.

1. The commish posted he was available for proxies and messed up, he failed.

2. Shysters3 only sent a proxy to 1 person. Failed.

3. I was the first person to pick after the posting of the missed proxy. I failed.

4. The commish failed to announce a solution. Fail.

5. We continued the draft. Many failed.

I cannot speak for everyone involved. But I can speak for myself. I was wrong when I made my pick. I should have posted that I would hold up my pick until this issue was resolved. I believe everybody behind me would have honored this move and held up the draft for a few minutes/hours. But I didn't, I started the ball rolling downhill getting deeper and deeper into the mess we are in now. I feel bad that I helped this screwup. Only because I was in a hurry to pick, shoulda thought it thru better.

I for one would not have a problem with backing up. Let's to the right thing here. The ball is in Outbackers court here. I will agree with whatever he decides is best for the league.

Anyways, my two bits.

Italian American Brooklyn Dodger MVP: Dolph Camilli

Adolph Louis "Dolph" Camilli was an Italian American All Star first baseman with the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1940s. Camilli was born in San Francisco on April 23, 1907. He spent eight years in the minors then came up with Cubs and was traded to the Phillies. He hit 25 or more HRs three years straight for the Phils before being traded to Brooklyn in 1938 for Eddie Morgan & $45,000.

He became a popular fugure with the Brooklyn Dodgers, leading the league in walks in 1938 & 1939, driving in over 100 runs the next four seasons and would hit 23 or more HRs in each of the next five seasons. He made the 1939 & 1941 All Star teams. His best year came in 1941 when he won the NL MVP leading the league in HRs (35) & RBIs (120), he batted .285 and hit 25 doubles. His weakness was striking out, something he led the league in four times including his MVP season. He set the single season strikeout mark twice and at one time was the all time leader. But Camilli is remebered for leading Brooklyn to thier first World Series in 21 years in that 1941 MVP season, although he only batted .167 in Fall Classic. The next season he finished second in the NL HR (26) & RBI (109) race and batted .252. He would finish in the top 4 in HRs every season from 1935-1942, and in the top 8 of RBIs & runs scored as well.

He refused to report to the hated NY Giants in 1943 when he was traded therechosing to work on his cattle ranch instead. He made a brief return with Boston in 1945 batting .212 then called it quits for good. He coached in the Pacific Coast league and scouted for the Angels. He & his wife had seven children, one son Doug also played for the Dodgers and caught one of Sandy Koufaxs no hitters. Strangely Gil Hodges played with both father & son in his career. Dolph's brother, Frankie Campbell, was a heavyweight boxer who died as a result of being knocked out by champion Max Baer. Dolph Camilli died in 1997 at age 90 in San Mateo California, but lives on in Brooklyn Dodger lore.
He was elected to the Dodgers HAll of Fame in 1994 and said of the Brooklyn fans: "All they cared about was their family, their job and the Dodgers. And I don't know which one was the most important."

As it stands I would have to subtract each players multiple team stats to get it.

I just want to type say 1950 to see how many players are available to draft for that season.

Is there a way?

....I see it now,

thanks uncleal & ox,

it sucks that we have to delete multiple players manually instead of just getting a correct number, considering that there's so many progressives going.

bump for survey

9/4/2009 3:34 PM
Evaluating this in detail today. I have a few questions...
9/9/2009 1:06 PM
A: A feature to automatically advance the league to the next scheduled season.
1. Must be able to advance both forward and/or backwards a set number of seasons, to be set by the league commissioner.
2. All players are advanced to a team center like format. A simple checkbox could be used to mark keepers. Players on DL could be designated and cuts placed back into the player pool.
3. Available player list would be available for onscreen viewing or printout. This list should be sortable and show all player years. Useful for planning strategies. Presently the commish must cut and paste and manually remove players from this list. This is extremely time consuming and prone to errors.

-------------
The first item is not very doable as it ties to purchasing and future earmarked seasons. Lots of potential headaches involved. In a perfect world, it would be smooth sailing but that's not what we have.

Can you elaborate on point 2?

With regards to 3, are you thinking about something different than the white list popup you can view in the draft center? When you say player years, are you thinking his career seasons such as 1962-63, 1965, 1967-73?
9/9/2009 1:15 PM
B: An updated drafting utility linked to our keeper list/team center
The present WIS drafting utility is not perfect and update would be required.
1. A feature to allow owners to make a draft list or queue. That could automatically pick from this list of the owner misses his pick time. A rating system for players would be nice but hard to implement.
2. The available player list would be updated instantly by the system, reducing mistakes both by the league members and the commissioners.
3. The ability to sort through available players by position and future stats for upcoming season (for planning on target seasons).
4. The drafting utility should be capable to be used for the initial draft.

-----
We could make the change to handle 1 and 2 (assuming you mean once a player is drafted he is removed from the available list). I assume addressing #1 handles #4.

Not sure what you have in mind for 3. Are you saying you want something outside of the player search? If so, how do you envision it?
9/9/2009 1:18 PM
C: Most importantly the league Commissioner needs to have total access to the keeper lists and draft process. Progessive leagues tend to lose players every season, the commissioner needs to have access, allowing him to:
1. Access both the draft and keeper lists. Make cuts and draft picks if needed.
2. Add or remove an owner from the league. Many times owners leave in the middle of a draft. The commish needs to take action.
3. The commissioner can set up the parameters for a specific league, progressive/regressive, 1 season steps or multi season steps, multi era leagues, draft order and traded picks.
4. The commissioner should have control of when the process begins and when all cuts are final. He should be able to setup draft times and the length of time for picks
5. Draft picks can be made “off the clock” prior to the official start of the draft.

-----
We could add a keeper list page to the GM area for multi-season leagues that allow owners to check a theme-specified number of players. These players, or keepers, could then be made available via popup window in the draft center and league office.

When you're talking about "draft" here, are you talking about drafts held in the forums or in the live draft utility?

I'm just not following some of the items here. Could explain in more detail?

Thanks

D: Many different types of progressives and regressives exist, flexibility would be important.
1. Multi year progressives. Some mixed draft, some with different leagues or divisions using different eras.
2. Mixed progressive/regressive leagues
3. Leagues of mixed player seasons, these leagues players progress though their career year by year. Many different years would be involved. With the ability to “blacklist” players already used.
4. The ability to handle a minor league system, with the rosters/keepers of more than 25 players.
5. Allow leagues to be more public, allow anybody to view your league. But only league members my actually do anything besides looking.
6. The ability to search on multiple criteria (ex) 1958 last year players and 1968 first year players.

----
The current system can handle (1) and (2) and (3) by specifying white lists by season.

With (5), are you interested in people being able to see historical standings and team information?

4 and 6 are difficult but possible.
9/9/2009 1:26 PM
2: Improvement of the league/player history.

A: Presently league/player stats can be viewed individually but needs improvement.
1. The ability to have a career leader board including active and retired players. This should be sortable like the present season leaderboard.
2. Team career stats, again sortable.
3. A league HOF feature would be great, upon retirement league members could nominate and vote.
4. A simple listing of all players for a specific seasons including players on DL or Military Service.
-----
(1) and (2) are doable.

(3) is much more complicated but doable.

(4) could you elaborate?

Thanks
