Not sure when it shifted, but new players used to ask questions in the forums all the time...at least back when I started. Then it got to the point where new questions were met with sarcastic responses of how you could find that information for yourself if you just looked around. While that was probably true in most cases, it didn't foster the kind of environment where asking questions and getting advice from vets was encouraged.

Big agreement there, kmfloyd. Daalter has tried to create a "Rookies ask, Vets answer" thread, and it's worked, on a limited basis. The user guide I envision would be updated with any new question and answer (if WIS deemed it ok to release such info).

This user guide would need to be fully indexed, to allow players, especially new ones, the ability to find needed answers in a reasonably efficient time.

I agree 100%! That's why I seldom post in the forums, the responses are generally sarcastic and degrading. Lately it seems to be a little better. After asking a few questions in the forum when I started I started looking at coaches resumes and started sending questions through site mail and received very helpful responses. oldresorter, zhawks, dogget, fobermeyer, jbasnight, jbob, rails, porkpower, drubrally were the ones that helped me. I'm sure I missed a few and I apologize but these guys were helpful and I appreciated the advice or guidance they gave me.

Sure, the honor system works okay but I'd say most new guys don't know to ask, or who to ask if they do know. If there were a list of volunteers/assigned mentors, I just think that might be better for retention
Exactly. It's less about rewarding the vets (I wouldn't care if that was part of it or not), more about ensuring that the new guys are provided with the proper resources to want to stay with HD.

Exactly, daalter. If the vets with the answers were simply shown appreciation (doesn't have to be in reward points, but in some sort of intangible way) by HD, vets will do a better job of mentoring, more like the old days. The way it is now, my perception of HD management is that of an extremely obtuse group. Change that perception, by consistent action, and the vets start helping more.

I think there is a big difference between how you would bring in new players and how you retain current players by making them happy enough to continue playing (or paying more to the point).

It all starts with having a quality product to build off of which they have. I think they have room for improvement but they have a good base.

Strictly from an awareness building aspect they really do need to market better/more efficiently. I work for another large media company and a lot of friends/gamers I know have yet to even here of WIS and more directly HD and I'm based in LA. There is obviously some disconnect if they are not even aware of the game. I think cross promoting on other Fox outlets is a good start. Easier said than done, but even adding a segment on Sunday morning NFL preview shows or even in-game mention using WIS's NFL simulation picks would build greater awareness to WIS and then you find a way to drive viewers to the individual sim games they have. Directly for HD, find a way to go directly at the college bb fan. Honestly, go to even a small D1 mid major and put up a small promotional banner and you would probably find enough new players to fill a couple D3 conferences for a season or two. I think improvements need to be made to keep people (including possibly lowering the price slightly per season) but that is a whole different side of things.

Marketing and programming are two completely separate entities so I really don't think you have to focus on one or the other since there are (or should be) people in different dept's working on each of those problems. But if I had $100 dollars to split between the two departments I would give marketing more at this point. There are enough BB fans out there to at least test the game for a season that you should almost always have a full D3 system, even if it's a constant revolving door of new people. There would be some retention which would filter up to D2 and D1 over time but considering that you aren't see new players in D3 testing the game then word isn't really getting out there or at least getting out there properly. They tried doing this somewhat with free HD but honestly, that was mostly established players with alternate ID's taking advantage of that more than it was new players testing the waters.

do you realize a team that goes 0-26 but somehow gets 3 conf. tourney wins wouls get more of a credit than if i get to the 2nd rd. of the nat. tourney.

Well, not really, because if he went 0-26 he would actually have to win 4 games in the CT to make the big dance. Just saying..

no emy if you go 0-26 and make it to the conf. championship game and lose you would get a $2.00 credit which is basically one 7th of a team, and if you make the nt and lose in the 2nd rd. you would recieve 200 reward points which is one 10th of a team, so actually you would receive more going 0-26 and getting to the conf. championship game and losing

1. I would reinstate full reward points in all divisions.

2. Reward points for free seasons can only be used in the world that they were earned. No using your DIII team in IBA to supplement your DI team in Smith.

3. No reward points earned during seasons purchased with reward points.

Gotcha, thought you were talking strictly about reward points.
11/9/2009 10:15 PM
I thought the credit WIS gave you was strictly based on your overall teams success (or lack thereof) based on how far you were from getting to the tourney. Is the CT really taken into account when these are figured out?

to respond to the comment that i should have put forth some sort of marketing plan when i commented on their need for better marketing....i'm paying them, they aren't paying me
