Except it isn't the same per year value.

2 years, $50m = $25m per.
5 years, $110m = $22m per.

You can offer him the 2 yr 50 million dollar deal, and I'll dish out the 5 year deal and see who wins out.

he signed this guy: http://whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=739615 for 5 years declining every year: 7.1, 6.7, 6.5, 6.3, 6.1

why sign him for 6.1 at age 37 (when his salary will be decidedly an albatross) if it lowers the overall value of the deal?

Oddly, that might not be so bad for me. You could hold the division for another year or two while I try to steal a WC, and then once he declines ever more I won't have to worry about you with the $20M middle RP albatross weighing you down!

My understanding is that total value wins once a players per year demand is met. So, if a player is asking for 9m/year then:

5/60 > 3/55 and 3/30 > 5/44

You don't have to worry about getting in a bidding war with me. Your tandem pitching style pitching staff would be screwed if you lost him. I could see Damon as an Astro.

Speaking of which, it might not be bad to have my tandem pitching staff style get screwed and be forced to go back to a conventional staff for the Twins. That's the only way we seem to be able to bring home the whole thing and end the season on a win!

i believe it will.

i once signed a guy to 5/73 with a mutual option, and i recall another guy saying he offered something like 4/70.

That was my impression, too, which is unfortunate. I was hoping I was mistaken.

Looks like Damon's $ may go to Kyle Powell and the Twin Cities will see a return to a conventional staff. Oh well.

Uh, because you've reached the max in a certain year that you can offer? Add a year at the price you need to secure the top bid.
