And if you believe that story, I've got some really amazing swamp land to sell you.

CB, I usually agree with and think you're both reasonable and knowledgeable. But the fact is that McDonald's kids (not to mention other 4- and 5-stars) choose non-elite programs with pretty good regularity. I just can't agree with your conclusion that elite recruits are going to automatically default elite schools just isn't reality.

In the last two years alone, McDonald's AA's have committed to Clemson, K-State, FSU (x2), Nova, Alabama, Virginia, Rutgers, Nevada, Oregon and USC, among others. And that's the elite of the elite.

Furthermore, we all know you can't provide a really great comparison with recruiting in real life vs. HD, but since you want to go that route ...

If a team like UVA pulled out all the stops, made this kid the focus of all their recruiting efforts, told him he'd be their superstar, build the program around him, he'll be just another guy at MD ... then yes, there are plenty of real-life players who would opt for UVA in that situation.

And that's exactly what those McDonald's AA's did above, because all of them had opportunities to land at a Duke/UNC/Kansas/UCLA-type school if they had opted to go that route.

One thing I will say is that it's incredibly annoying to get challenged by a team that literally has zero chance of beating you in the battle, but syphons off valuable money from you anyway.

(And when I say zero, I mean like the case I had a couple seasons ago, when I had superior prestige, way more cash, no battles and was 330 miles from a kid vs. a school that came in from 2,000 miles away. Obviously I shook him off easily, but you absolutely have to wonder what their methodology is ... could they actually think they had a snowball's chance in that example?)

That said, I don't put UVA in that class in the case. He had a chance. OR just got that #1 sf in Allen at UWGB, which was awesome. (I mean, we all know that OR uses booster gifts, but still. )

But as someone else said, people challenging you in recruiting, even when it's an ill-fated challenge, is just part of the game and you have to accept it.

I generally agree with CB and he is one of the guys I admire in our little game. But I think making the most powerfull more potent so they never had to even try, to stay on top is a horrible idea.

Why even play the game if the top 20 DI schools get the top 50 kids with no fight at all. Recruiting (in the current game) is about 80% of the game IMHO. If the top programs can't ever be challenged why play? Do we actually have to wait for you guys to die to ever climb to those lofty heights you enjoy?

I like the idea that if I have a B level school and want to spend my entire $75,000 budget on one top-10 kid... I don't care who you are you should have to dig pretty deep to land the kid.

I'm thinkin CB's girlfriend be postin on here again

nope, just me throwing a fit because I don't like dealing with stubborn people. Adapt or die, you know?

I'll stop whining. But I am going to have to show him some manners, and maybe if I get lucky he'll decide to either change or quit, eventually.

I always wonder this too dalt. I have had quite a few teams try and battle me in the past with a full letter grade below me and at best 1/2 the money I have. All this while I was only recruiting 2 less then my open 'ships, no battles. It makes ya wonder.

Funny how interconnected the sports world is.

I was trying to think of players who spurned big programs. Earl Jones came to mind. In 1980, he turned down UCLA and UNLV (and Jerry Tarkanian) to play at DII District of Columbia. He led them to the DII title and played a few games in the NBA.

Curious about his career, I googled Jones' name. I discovered that Jeff Ruland is the new coach at District of Columbia, taking the job despite being on probation until 2013. Jeff Ruland, as well, turned down Kentucky and Indiana to star at Iona under coach Jim Valvano.

Does anyone else here lie when another coach who they just battled with asks how much they spent?

I always like to make it seem like I got the guy for less than I actually did to make the other coach rethink battling me in the future.

Ive never spent more than 1K on a recruit in all my seasons

Josh,

I understand the point you're trying to make, but I don't believe it would be a good thing for the game. If the top prestige schools were challenged even less during recruiting, then that would only serve to make them stronger and kill any parity. The mid to lower level schools would stand no chance of competing.

I actually disagree with you somewhat anyway. While normally it doesn't take much in real life for a Duke or UNC to sign a recruit, there are some guys that go to lesser schools that could easily play at an elite. For example, Blake Griffin signed with Oklahoma with them coming off a 16-15 season and not playing in the postseason.

I guess I'll just have to hope that the UVA coach gets fired.

I would not have posted this. Although most coaches can figure out who is battling who, you just made it clear that UVA is a full out battle so coaches should keep the eye out for it. You kind have made yourself a target now by exposing that UVA won't back down and will make you use a large chunk of funds without forcing the coaches to have to guess.
