You really wouldn't play a guy with 79-74 range-glove at 2B? Ever? If he hits his offensive projections, you're looking at an OPS in the high .800s. I would gladly take average (which 79-74 is at 2B) or slightly below-average defense to put that kind of bat at 2B.

Although, I would be cautious with the projections. If his current ratings are 58-50-40-45, then I'd be thinking that there's a good chance he's never going to get close to good enough to play 2B. But if his current ratings are like 65-55-50-50, then I'd be fine taking him at the top.

I agree that it's somewhat weak for a top-2 pick, and I would consider taking the pitcher if he was outstanding, especially since I could raise scouting the next year if he Type D's.

Player A by a landslide.

PS- Neither of those players will be able to play 2B or RF in the bigs.

Here's the top 2 arms:

Pitcher A: Pitcher B:

Durability: 24 34
Health: 82 63
Patience: 72 73
Temper 31 49
Makeup 53 76

Pitches:
Stamina 72 78
Control 90 85
VsL: 85 65
VsR: 96 83
Velocity: 36 76
GB/FB: 69 85

P1: 99 89
P2: 78 72
P3: 57 52
P4: 37 47

Pitcher A says he probably won't sign, Pitcher B says looking to be drafted in 1st 5 rounds, so he most likely will sign.

Overall potential: Pitcher A 84, pitcher B 81

Thanks for all the help guys, I've got 3 teams going now and I'm trying to learn as much as possible so I can get them going in the right direction. This kind of discussion helps me, for one, getting opinions, and two seeing if I'm thinking of these players the right way.

I like:

Pitcher A

Pitcher B

Player B

Player A

in that order. Pitcher A is going to be filthy. If he signs, he's fantastic. If not, you get to use the $4m on an IFA and budget for the #3 pick + your regular pick at 18 scouting. The other 3 are close, but I like the fact that Pitcher B can go 3 times in a 7 game series with that Durability. If his vsL projected a bit better, he'd be a clear 2nd choice to me. The two hitters have their pluses and minuses. Between all 3 of these players, I'd be very careful to take the one whose currect ratings make you the most comfortable that they will come close to their projections.

Thanks, I hadn't really thought much about the current ratings issue. I can see how that would impact.

I really like Pitcher A, but I'm trying to stomach possibly being w/out pick this year if he doesn't sign. Pitcher B's splits against ies scare me a bit but otherwise I can see his potential.

Thanks everyone.

Agreed.

If pitcher A has an agent, it might be worth the roll of the dice to grab him and see if he responds to your initial offer by just upping the ante. If pitcher A is represented by his mom he will almost certainly not sign-- then pitcher B and player A are both just a little worse than I'd hope for at pick #2.

Edit-- and both are noticeably better than Player B.

I'm not so much surprised that people are choosing Player A over Player B, to me that's a judgment call and could go either way.

What I find very surprising are the "it's not a touch decision"/"by a landslide"/"noticeably better" comments. If you like him as a 2B, I can see his bat there being worth it.

If you accept that he's a LF (and not too many people seem to be penciling him at 2B), are you all that focused on vs RH or are you assuming makeup means Player B doesn't get to his proj?

Because, if you gave me the choice of the two players at proj right now, B would be the choice every time for me.

I'd play him at 2B or, perhaps, 3B, given that AS seems to be undervalued there compared to real life. That's why I like him better.

I'd play a 79/74 2B in a heartbeat to get that offense at 2B. And I value defense quite a bit. I think people are overstating the difference between say an 80/80 at 2B and a 79/74. I think the difference would be negligible, and getting that bat at 2B is huge.

That said, if a guy projects to 79/74, there's a better than average chance he doesn't get there. And the lower he tops out, the less liklihood he can play a 2B. At #2, I'm hoping for more than a good bat that "might" be able to play 2B or a corner OF that isn't HOF-potential at the plate.

In other words, I'd hope for better than either of those guys at #2. At #2, I'd either take a stud pitcher or a SS (a real SS) that can hit. If neither was available, I'd take the best player that was doubtful for signing and hope he doesn't and try again next season.

In your case, I'd take the stud pitcher. If he signs, great. If not, they'll most likely be better options in next season's draft because I don't think either of those position players are what you hope for at #2.

Look at S4 for this guy....I would say that he is an acceptable 2B. Even since the update, with deteriorating fielding ratings, he has stayed around .980 fielding %.

He is also a much weaker hitter and still has always put 800-900 OPS.

I think this pretty much nails it. I like 80/75 at 2B. At least, that's my desired minimum number. But I won't pee my pants because I can only get 79/74. And I'm a defense guy.

So, if I have to choose between a 75/71 who can rake and a 82/76 with an OPS of .726, it's an easy decision for me.

But, like I said before, I'd draft him as a LF and the other guy as a 1B. And the LF is more valuable.

Thanks guys, lots of food for thought. There are a couple of other players I hadn't considered much, one's s SS w/power potential of 99, but lower splits...anyway, one thing I've learned is that I need to increase my scouting budget.

I had entirely written off Pitcher A, but after all the discussion, I'm realizing he could be worth the shot.

Thanks again.
