WHICH IS YOUR TOP TWO PITCHER CATEGORIES Topic

splits (vs. right a bit more important than vs. )...then control...then stamina...then any pitch over 70 regardless of whether it's 1 or 2...

I try to avoid -handed pitchers. I have found it very difficult to find a reliable, consistent southpaw unless his vR split is extremely high.

I'm not answering until there's agreement between the verb and the plural noun in the question.

Good idea.

You took the anal rententive grammar police words right out of my mouth!!

splits and pitches are my priority...control just has to be over 50, although i'll mess with a guy in the 40's if his other ratings are really good. vR is especially important for LH SP's.

What your mouth was doing in that position is nothing I want to hear about.

....about which you want to hear?

Several good answers here beerbellys. Now would you like the best answer? Look at everything. This guy would not meet half the criteria listed on this thread: http://www.whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=1813158 due to his control, 1st pitch, etc. However, the fact that none of those numbers is actually bad has made him a nice #3 pitcher. Besides the numbers that affect his pitching, the 83 Health and 92 Makeup assures that he stays healthy and is showing zero decline even into his late 30's. Best of all, that 99 patience means he keeps coming back every year for a new one year contract, and the low 71 overall rating means he signs dirt cheap.

Disclaimer: I have to admit his numbers are probably helped out by playing in front of a stellar defense, which was the focus of this team.

Not sure why you wouldn't expect him to be a good pitcher. 70+ splits, 60+ control, 2x70+ pitches, 2x60+ pitches. If just one of those pitches exceeded 80, he'd be a #1 on a lot of teams.
5/26/2010 8:05 PM
I fully expected him to be good. But according to a lot of posts here, some of these guys would look at the 62 control and 71 first pitch and pass him by without looking at the total package....including non-pitching ratings which are a key to his overall value.

While neither one of those are overly desireable, they are far from deal breakers.

It's kind of like the "Moneyball" philosophy . . . look for value where others don't.
5/26/2010 9:01 PM
For some they do seem to be deal breakers:

"I discount virtually any pitcher with control below 70. I just don't like them."

Honestly, you probably summed up what I was trying to say better in a sentence than I did in a paragraph, tec. Not trying to knock anyone else's ideas of a quality pitcher, just reminding them not to pass on a pitcher based off 3 or 4 ratings.

Yeah, that happens. Those are the owners who are toughest to deal with, because their minds are somewhat narrow when it comes to judging value. Closely followed by the owners who only want to deal if they clearly (in their mind) "win" the trade.
