Oh, and I'm semi-rooting for North Korea for humor value. But who isn't?

It's your right and I certainly wouldn't think any less of you, but I don't really get it.Then again, I'm a jingoistic, red-meat consuming McCarthyite.

well, i grew up playing "soccer", and really enjoyed it. it was not at all treated the same here in the US as the other big sports. its really a second class citizen when it comes to sports, and it is the biggest sport in many other countries by far. so i have kind of always thought of football as a non US sport, and thus, never rooted for them in the world cup (i did a little just because its where i live but not much). i do root for the US in the olympics etc, so i do see where you guys are coming from.

Going for the Dutch all the way. Go Oranje.

I'll be rooting for the US - out of the 5-6 teams with a legitimate chance to win, I'll be rooting for the Dutch and Spanish.

I've tried to watch the first half of the Mex/S.Africa game. I think watching a cactus grow will be more interesting.

Very good First half...Mexico should be up 1-0...Does soccer need the instant replay?

And I understand that the US has tons of cultures. However how can you not root for your home country first. Show some pride in the guys out there representing us. Again if you like a team for play style or your heritage its fine, but you should at least be rooting for the US somewhat. Some people dont even care about them.

why? what if you are a human first, and an american second. then there is no argment for rooting for the USA over the other countries. it always kills me when in the news its like, OMG a plane crashed and FOUR americans died. and oh yeah, 300 other people died too. but who gives a crap about them. FOUR americans died.
I see what you are saying. But, the basic answer to that is having a pride in your nation.

I think a case could be made for not rooting for them at all. The majority of our sports fans and a lot of our sports media love to disrespect soccer. Why would you root for the World Cup to be won by a country that wouldn't appreciate it?
6/11/2010 10:08 PM
I can't name 1 player on the US world cup team, or 1 player playing in the world cup on any team. I don't think I could root for my country just to root for my country, especially when there is no passion behind it. They are offering them 20 mil to go out and win it, and less just to at least put some effort and show up to the game. If I had to root for someone, it'd be a small country who the fans and players passionate about the game and truly have love for the sport. Whoever wins, good for them. It won't be USA though.

Saying you don't root for your home country because most people in your country don't appreciate them makes no sense. The people who root on through the hard times are the real fans, just ask any knick fan right now.

That goes toward the Celtics fans chanting for Kobe as well then!

England and USA tied 1-1 when England's goaltender let the tying goal slip between his hands. That's a great boost for the USA's chances of advancing out of the group.
