Selective tanking? Topic

Woah, death is getting philosophical.  I'm out.  :)

And is that like the Matrix?  "What is real?"
I don't want to hear about you taking the blue pill, Floppy.

Well, "Is it tanking?" and "Is it wrong?" are two different questions.  You're assuming that since tanking, as we consider it in the forums, is wrong, and assuming Mike's situation is tanking (which is what the discussion is about), then Mike's situation must be wrong.  But if this is tanking then not all tankings are equal.

And now my head hurts.

No way, I want to see how deep the rabbit hole goes.  Give me the red!

Well, philosophical speaking, I wouldn't be able to throw games to keep someone out.  I wouldn't be able to throw games to improve my match-up.   However, subconsciously, I think I could do the 2nd(improve my match-up) and easily rationalize it.   I don't think I'd be able to do the first(keep someone out).   It's really pretty simple.   I could improve my match-up and everyone who should be in the playoffs is still in the playoffs.   Keeping someone out is a bit more than I could stomach.  But, techinically, I'd be doing the same thing by playing my call-ups in order to rest and/or avoid injury to my regulars.

If I'm the 4 seed, and you're the 3 seed, go ahead and lose as many games as you want. The 5 seed, at least half the time, is the second best team in the league because they were in the division with the 1 seed. Then if you win that series, you have to beat the best team in the league. Give me the 6, who probably had to battle to secure his spot so his players aren't rested, and 2 seeds everyday of the week.

Somebody can't read.

Just because you went 1-9 vs. a guy, that doesn't tell you ****. What were the pitching matchups. Did you have a guy injured? Was it before you called up your prospect? And the guy you want to face, did you never get his ace? Injuries? Prospects?

You got people talking about karma. It ain't karma to put yourself in a worse situation.

Really?  Going 1-9 against a guy doesn't tell you ****?    Is your schedule different than mine?   I play 3 or 4 game series against everyone.

If anything it tells you the dude has been lucky against you and it will probably normalize back. But like I said, you can think that he owns you, and you can go ahead and lose out and face the top two teams. I'll take my chances with the other guys.
10/20/2010 7:17 PM

Yeah, I see your point.  The dude was good enough to be a playoff team but only because he got lucky a bunch of times.   Makes perfect sense.

10/20/2010 7:23 PM
No, he was lucky against you, another playoff team. You don't go 1-9 vs. teams that are over .500 without luck. And the more games you play, the more likely things are going to approach .500.
10/20/2010 7:57 PM

I already agreed with you.   Getting your *** kicked 9 times out of 10 is just luck.   It's painfully obvious.

10/20/2010 8:35 PM
Well that's good then, because thinking his #8 hitter with the .700 OPS is going to perform better than that against you because he hit 3 of his 8 HRs against you in those 10 games. Or your closer who blew 2 of his 6 saves against this team is going to pitch poorly because they're in his head. It's good knowing it's not better to go against the better team because you beat his #5 starter 3 times, because he's no longer on the playoff roster.

Anomalies occurring during your 10 game season series is one possible scenario.  But regardless of how it happened, if I'm going to play a team in a 5 or 7 game series, I won't feel too good about it if I went 1-9 against them during the year with (likely) roughly the same teams.
10/20/2010 10:55 PM
No, mhulshult, it's obvious that going 1-9 against another team is merely a by-product of luck.    There is absolutely no reason to think that team will be better than you in a 5 or 7 game series.   May as well flip a coin.
