One problem I see going forward, is that you get to 1986 or 1987 and have a bad team, you don't have time to rebuild...so what keeps you in the league?  I am not committing to join, however if you don't mind I would suggest though some kind of pot or prize payed out one season after the 89 season.  Have a season where each franchise play's with their all-stars from the 80-89 seasons.  Then everyone should be able to be competitive.  Just a thought, interesting premise.

That's an important thought to consider. I really don't want to add another season to it - that seems anticlimactic. However, the problem of teams dropping out late could be a problem and I need to figure out some way to make it less of one.

What you might want to do is leave open the possibility of having the progressive continue after 1989... but your main premise, the best record over the 1980-89 span compared against the franchises' real life performance should remain as the criteria for the winner's prize.

Those who wish to stay on after 1989 could keep their teams and play forward through the 90's and on, but the ranking against the real life teams would make little sense, since by then, the teams would be radically different from the original lineups. It might simply become a progressive just like any other.

Or you could start the league over based on the same premise after the 89 season with the 90 season, starting with the original opening day rosters for your chosen franchise in 1990. that'd be cool if you could get everyone to stick around.

dreeves - that might be the best idea so far. The problem might go the other way, though. If people are building their team to win in 1989, there might be a bunch of people with awful teams in 1990 that decide to drop out.

macattack - I thought of doing another decade, but that doesn't really help keep people around through the late 80's if their team has taken a bad turn. Another decade with all new rosters would be another whole theme with no continuity.

start in 80 and keep going. . .

What interests me about this league is the concept -- progressive with limited span.  It's a new dynamic and changes drafting philosophy, team-building philosophy, etc.  Something new.

I would only play through 1989.  As far as incentivizing owners to stay -- reward the teams that most exceed its real-life counterparts decade win total.  Use the credits you can obtain through admin for every 5-years of running progressives to pay out.  Could be something like 40 dollars to first, 20 to second, 15 to third.  That could keep a team that has been crappy, but perhaps exceeding win totals, interested.

Thanks for the input. I tend to agree.

I was already thinking about giving prizes for both the 1989 WS winner and to the team or teams that best improve upon real life. I've just got to sit down and figure out exactly how to break it down. I've never run a league like this before :)

My concern (and I think the one originally voiced) is if someone takes a team that was good in real life in the late 80's. What if they, by poor management, run it into the ground in the middle 80's? They've no chance of winning the WS in 1989, and no chance of outperforming a good real-life team. Unless it's someone with a strong sense of finishing what they started, they could understandably ditch on the league, and that team would be VERY hard to re-fill.

Maybe I could arrange the prizes where I would still have a couple of free teams available in case this comes up. That way myself or another owner could take over the derelict franchise to finish up the league without having to pay for it.
