tbarket, a couple of thoughts after your recruiting period:
- People have a lot of different opinions about the timing of recruiting - whether to recruit early, late, or throughout. I don't think there's one right answer. But in your situation, I think the key was that you had to go after most of your spots late enough that the chance of a battle was reduced. The exact timing will depend on the quality of the recruit. If you're going after a low-ratings, high-upside player, you might be able to jump on him early without too much risk of a battle. But if you're going after pulldowns, or the highest-rated guys on your D3 board, I think you'd be better off waiting a day (or 2 or 3) and seeing which of them are still undecided. There's a lot of quality still around after signings start, esp at D3. And those late guys will generally come cheaper too. Patience makes a big difference.
- As soon as you're in a battle, you've got to decide quickly if you're going to stay in or bail. If there are any other recruits available who are almost as good, BAIL QUICKLY. Don't hang on just because he was your guy first, or because you think you need him more than the other coach does. Again, at D3, there are a lot of recruits of about the same quality. In my last 10 D3 seasons in Naismith, I think I got into 3 battles total - and I had an A or A+ prestige 7 out of those 10 seasons. Battles are WAY over-used at D3.
