Now, what you will notice is that below, is that unless we raise the PA limit, we get exactly 4 new players available that we did not have before. Since everyone is working from the same database, and the same pool of players, this means that we will still likely have the same relatively homogeneous rosters. Eliminating the batting average does not get us a lot of players in other words, who hit over what was already a relatively generous level of .320.

So, I am open to ideas. One might be no salary cap on individual players at all - sky's the limit, but we lower instead of raising the PA maximum to 450, keeping the platoon idea but getting higher quality hitters. Let's see what happens:   This gets us different names ONLY because most of these were on subsequent pages - lower salary levels and values, on our previous searches. Not player is above the $5.4 million of Don Buford. So raising the salary level has no effect at all on the available players. And eliminating the batting average limit altogether has very little - a few more players, not much.

Now that only leaves us with one option to enlarge the pool of players available: since we raised the salary level but no player is above Don Buford's $5.4 million salary that adds no one, and raising the avg. limit adds very few, the only other option is to eliminate the OPS limits which were intended to exclude cookies. Let's keep the PA limit very low at 450 requiring considerable platooning and see what happens without the OPS limit:

Sorry, the formatting went all over the place, but see the first 4 names.  If our intention was to get more ordinary players, this doesn't do it. 

So, any suggestions: mine is either those I outlined as suggestions, or that we all sign up for more progressive leagues where players that don't get a chance even in our league end up on rosters.

The quest has nothing to do with who is available (per se). It is who we select, and how we use them. Without some sort of draft that gives exclusive rights to a player, the best players under whatever system are going to be on several teams. The quest is putting the right combination together in the right park, and hoping Lady Luck has a smile for me, as well.

Food for thought:

The teams look much the same because there's a relatively high salary cap with a low player cap. I think with a $70-75M salary cap this league could be extremely interesting - talent scarcity and such.

you could also changesome of the pitching criteria say having 1 pitcher with an hr/9 of betwen 0.70 0.90 .Conbine that with  having a 440 PA guy with an average no higher than .240.One time could be a minimum salary of $1,000,000. Combine that with allowing only 1 max pitcher salary and 1 max hitter salary.I realize this makes a great deal of work for commissioner verification.Don't yell at me just trying to throw something at the wall

reddtrain, if I understand what you are suggesting, now that I have learned a little more about the logic behind low salary cap leagues, is that at a lower overall salary cap we don't really need the individual salary caps for one thing, since it kind of takes care of itself. Without AAA it pretty much enforces, if not platooning, a good deal of creative drafting and management. 

So, I have one question: doesn't that result in a similar problem of similar lineups and rosters because the pool is smaller of good players that are affordable at say $70 mil, or does it actually force you to do what we have tried to do by a much more complex method: vastly enlarge the pool of relevant players, because both you and your opponents have to look twice at a .260 hitter with 400 PA at 2B and a B+ defense because that becomes valuable?


As you can all see, I have become skeptical that the more complicated methods, which I was anxious to try out here, are really the best way to go. I think more and more the simpler methods are better:

first, progressives: they solve ALL these problems in a fell swoop and provide ENDLESS need for creative drafting, managing general managing etc.; they guarantee the utmost variety of players because there is only one of each in every league. etc. And on one team right now I will have three players each 2B, SS and 3B - we are WAY beyond platooning here.

Second, the next best thing, which might very well be a low cap league - going to $70 million, no AAA. If you set a minimum like 500K or 1mil for each player and pitcher, you have taken care of the whole problem, and probably don't even need any of the other obstacles we set up on the course. 

Food for thought. Jeff4noles, I agree that a minimum is still needed to keep the spirit and practice of platooning or at least of having to use your whole team. So we may be making a lot of progress now. One exception you suggest - did I understand that right? Maybe, just to keep it more fun and and maybe we could take a page from pfattkatt's new theme league and have one player that doesn't have to be covered by the overall salary cap at all if they meet certain criteria, as in his league, they have to have no (or less than 5, I forget) previous uses.

I think you're right - with a $70M salary cap, IP/PA limits, and a $750K-1M minimum salary, there's not a ton of wiggle room. You can get one ace PH way above .900 OPS, and maybe an elite closer - but the rest of the team is going to look mighty strange to those playing along whose only experience is OLs and high-$$$ leagues. 

I'd certainly be in for something like that. I'm probably in regardless, but...

i would suggest at least 80M.I would have very lowAAA .maybe 2 AAA players and pitchers.

Thanks both of you. I think we can come up with a workable synthesis from this. I have a ton of work over the next few days plus in what free time I have I have two drafts going on for progressive leagues. Give me till some time next week and I should be able to present something new that works these ideas into it.
