Press can be a bit weird. I could have a guy with bad def but high speed. You "go after him and he gets 5 steals and a bunch of tranny points.

So I dunno. I don't think people typically try to target like that against press. Most are concerned with taking care of the ball and taking advantage of the weaknesses of press. But maybe some do. Not 100% sure.

I try to stay away from doing gameplans that involve switching your lineup or changing your distro more than just a few points. I tried that when I first started playing, and I think that is why my teams weren't successful in the NT at first, because my actual players were better than my players now for RUN, but my teams couldn't win in the NT for a long time. I think I start to out game plan myself when I get into stuff like that.

But maybe that's a mistake on my part.

One of the aspects I enjoy about HD is gameplanning. Whether it's true or not, it "feels" like you can make a difference. "Draft your team, set your line-up and let it play out" is SLB. HBD is more complicated but, in the end, you have 9 spots in the order and all are getting 3-4 AB. You may be able to squeeze an extra 15-20 innings from your best pitcher over the course of a season but you're not adding 100. Roster construction, and avoiding injuries(mostly luck), are more important than day to day management.

In HD, you can give a guy a lot of shots or virtually none. You can spread your shots around. You can match your D up to "stop" a top scorer. Same with O to try to exploit a weakness. You can speed it up or slow it down. None of that may matter but it certainly makes you think it should.

I'd like to hear from some of the guys racking up Final Fours on the reg. I have to believe they gameplan. Or I'd like to.

IMHO this game is 90% recruiting talented players and proper roster construction and 10% proper game planning.

That's slightly disappointing. I'd say that's the same as HBD.

Bum Phillips said this about Don Shula "He can take his'n and beat your'n and take your'n and beat his'n." I was sort of hoping it was that way with the excellent coaches in HD. But, if it's 90% recruiting, I can certainly understand the caterwauling about losing 70/30 battles.

I think adjusting tempo is one of the most impactful settings you can do.

Dist seems like a big deal to me.

I'm still learning on the +/-5 because I think there's a lot of misinformation floating in the forums.
I also have no idea how effective double-teaming is. Seems like I can limit a top scorer, certainly not stop, but someone else seems to always make up for it.
And, finally, sub/start changes have bitten me in the ***. Sat a starter to allow him to take advantage of a weak back-up and we go to OT.

What I meant by what I said was that I didn't do anything extreme like changing player positions or jacking up distribution. What I do to Game plan is adjust tempo, positioning, and I slightly adjust distribution to give the players who are shooting above 50% more distribution and the ones shooting under less distribution. I don't change distribution based on what offense or defense I am playing.

But again, maybe that's my mistake.

I started making larger changes once I got to D1. I have -- though not often -- changed my lineup around to find better matchups. (I play M2M) And I tend to make larger changes to distribution from game to game. I identify my three or four scorers early on and move distro within those guys depending on the matchups.

I've had decent success the last couple seasons doing this, but that might be more the easy non-conference schedules I've been playing. For me, gameplanning every day is more about getting a clearer picture of my opponent.
