Coach K does everything Calipari does, but Coach K has better PR and his ESPN-Vitale (and Bilas) mouthpiece in place.

Coach K in a nutshell, paraphrased: "Look over there at Calipari!!! He's crooked with all his 1-and-dones!!! What do you mean i also do one-and-dones, how dare you question my program, we do things right!!! Look at the crooked Italian guys, Calipari and Pitino, or that abrasive Boston guy Calhoun!!! I'm Coach K, i'm 143 years old, squeaky clean, i run USA Basketball which helps recruit top players to Duke, but i run my program right, and don't you dare criticize my program!!! What, Zion was not paid nor do my players' uncles get sweetheart jobs, how dare you!!! Quick, look over there at what Calipari is doing!!! He's Italian so you know he's crooked!!!"

Also, if Wooden had coached into his 70's like Coach K, he'd have had another 5+ titles, up to around 15+.
No argument here whatsoever, except maybe for the 5+ more titles for Wooden. Bob Knight, Denny Crum, and Dean Smith (among others) would have had a lot to say about that in Wooden's final few seasons.

Was Zion paid? Probably. Are all the big time one and dones in college today "compensated"? Yep. Every. Last. One.
By the way, i totally agree on your Rupp comments. Not happening, but Rupp World should be renamed for someone else... Jim Calhoun World or John Thompson World or Gavitt World... right now we have no Worlds named after Big East coaches...

I could get behind renaming it after John Thompson.

well, while we agree on the baseline concept - i guess i don't find d1's 'race to the top' to be that bad, because there are *so* many viable teams relative to the number of humans per world. i really think people are overly concerned about the advantage of the kentuckys and north carolinas over the b- and b baseline schools. its more about the regional recruiting situation, and there's tons of solid programs that you can build. even the C baseline ones aren't that bad to get built into a solid program.
Ehhh....

Hi gillespie,
You have an amazing 14 national championships.

1 at Howard Payne.
1 at Texas A&M.
1 at South Carolina.
8 at Kansas (A+ prestige).
3 at UConn (A+ prestige).

You are a HOF coach who could win anywhere, on Mount Rushmore of HD for sure, but to be honest... coaching at A+ prestige schools can be... pretty... pretty... pretty.... pretty good.

:o)
fair point - but this is my 3rd ID, and i only used it as a primary account in my later, decrepit days - which gives a pretty sketchy view of the situation. when this ID was running concurrent with my others, it was the howard payne days, and later when i was mostly retired in place but couldn't pull the plug on any of them, the south carolina and texas a&m ones. its only my more recent tenure as a that is high prestige school heavy.

1st ID - gillispie
first 5 titles - colorado and texas a&m (tark) - neither better than B baseline. won first title at colorado on C prestige recruits, in my 3rd lifetime season in the BCS / 7th lifetime in d1

2nd ID - coach_billyg
first 11 titles - 2 in d3 (superclass) dubuque in rupp, i think, 9 in d2 (in 21 seasons) at SIUE in GLV d2 tark, first d2 program and most beloved conference

when i was coaching those IDs as my 2 primary teams (i never have more than 2), is when i was at howard with gillispie1.

also along the way back in those earlier days, i briefly coached 2 mid majors in d1, i think both were programs where i was trying a new scheme (fb/zone and fb/pr) starting on d+ prestige - i think both were d baseline. pretty sure both got to the elite 8 within 4 seasons, which to me is plenty for your first class at the school, with d+ prestige - it gets you a very big step forward in prestige, which you can hopefully parlay into more success? and both of those, i was still fairly new to d1, trying new things - over a longer period, im sure i could do better than that.

so, i'll give you that in my old age, i am lazy and use high prestige schools. i also had a co-coach gig at the same time as kansas, at a+ msu with dacj where we won 5 titles in 8 years (yes toppdogg, that one was co-coaching - but none of my gillispie / cbg accounts were). so i actually have been insanely a+ heavy lately, now that you mention it. but its not like i didnt prove my theory on prestige before that. also just won (yes dogg, a co-coach) title with a D prestige baseline and it didnt take us very long.

Tex just won the title at D1 with Texas San Antonio (congrats, btw!) and his prestige went from B to A-

Colorado is a very good B though Billy. It’s not like a Pittsburg or Rutgers or even Kentucky!

location and relative location are still probably more important than baseline prestige in D1

i totally agree, the regional competition / recruiting situation is way more important than baseline prestige, or even prestige sometimes.
