You know...I am completely sure I'm in the minority here, but I've found catcher defensive ratings across the board to be wildly overrated...you hear about all of "those teams," where the owner likes to steal bases, but I don't find them to be any more or less successful as a team against any of my squads. I've played worse catchers than that against teams like that, and won series'....

In Moonlight Graham, just this past offseason, I played a team like that, Little Rock, that had 2 guys over 100 steals, a third in the 90s and a fourth in the seventies (IIRC).

I put my all-star D-type catcher out there, and they went 13-15 against me in the first four games until I benched the guy and put in his FAR less superior, better offensive option in the game.

Granted, in that last game, they went 3-for-3 stealing bases. But we won the game by 8 runs.

ANYWAY...long story short, the reason that I think that the defensive ratings are overrated is because the stolen base just doesn't mean much in this game. Truly.

In MG, I was 8-8 in the playoffs against sickchangeup's turd catcher. I was 97/39 in the regular season. Even as the #1 seed, he put me out while his crappy catcher crushed the ball.

the catcher isn't awfull, but he as no good quality either, you could find better guys in the rule 5 draft or at the end of free agency.

I agree with this sentiment. You really don't see too many switch hitting Cs. Also, I agree with tropicana that base stealing doesn't seem to win you that many games, so to make a big deal about AA and AS is much to do about nothing. This guy is definitely ML material, not a star, but good enough for backup/platoon duty.

Diego Martin

and

Preston Weathers

I'd have to say that these are two of the best catchers I've ever seen available in a R5 draft, so it's a bit of a fluke

Martin looks like a screw-up. If you value PC, he won't be a catcher but it looks like he'll rip ies and have a high OBP. Weathers is a good back-up. I see guys like him every now and then.

Yeah, the owner who Martin off his 40 is not the strongest owner in this world. Martin's PC is a bit low, especially considering his not so great AS/AA. If I didn't already have Marc DeJean for vsL in this world, I'd be going for him.

I'd use him as my 2nd catcher and play him a good bit vs. ies. And he'd be a nice PH off the bench. My starting C in ABU has a 49 PC.
